We’ve had gardening threads where people talk about there naughty plants. You’ll have to search two or three years back.
No recommendations, but I find that site hilarious and awesome.
Thanks. If I just went by the color I’d be in zone 11 but that doesn’t account for elevation. We get a few sub-freezing nights every winter and occasional snow and frost so 9b is more realistic. I’m not sure why some of the zone 11 things that I have don’t die but it’s probably because cold snaps rarely last for more than a few days and it warms up to at least 50 during the day.
I can’t believe this. I was reading more about chasmathe to make sure that it would make it here and I saw a close up that looks like a kind of bulb that’s been in my garden from before I got here. As I read about chasmathe it started to sound more and more like it - it thrives on the edge of woodlands near the coast, flowers in midwinter, and naturalizes easily. Mine don’t just naturalize, they multiply exponentially and are almost impossible to dig out because there’s always a horde of little ones that get left behind. A few clumps are nice but dozens and dozens everywhere aren’t. Every year I dig up a few wheelbarrows full and haul them off to the woods to try to get rid of them and I still have twice as many the next year. I’ve never known what they were but they’re a pain in the ass. Now I think that I know what they are. Look at this:
Those bulbs cost $5 apiece on that website. Now I wonder if I’ve been throwing away a small fortune in bulbs that you can’t find in the US or if they’re as common as weeds around here.
OK, wait … I dropped into this thread because I spotted the words “boobs” and “crotch shrubbery”. Imagine my disappointment. Can we be a little more accurate and a little less graphic with the thread titles, please? I damn near sprained a wrist there!
Best source for bulbs:
Scheepers and Brent and Becky’s Bulbs are generally regarded well.
Some of the mail-order nurseries mentioned in this thread have bad reputations (and I’m not even referring to Ty Ty, whose reputation is somewhere south of disastrous, based on what dissatisfied customers are saying). Wayside Gardens has a gorgeous catalog but poor customer ratings of late.
For an extensive list of who sells bulbs of varying kinds (the search can be narrowed to a particular state), check out the Garden Watchdog, which features reviews of mail-order nurseries. You won’t find Ty Ty there (the word is that Garden Watchdog pulled all the horrendous reviews after there were warnings of legal action against it).
To satisfy the prurient who were drawn in by the thread title, I give you this little treasure and of course this old time favorite.
“Titty fruit”? Seriously?
