This week a bunch of daffodils popped out in my flower beds - almost overnight, it seems. I havefourdifferentkinds.
I also have something which is like lily-of-the-valley or snowdrops which are just beginning to start blooming. You can see (maybe!) one tiny white bell on the left side of this bunch.
I dug all those bulbs from a friend’s “old home place” a few years ago. Their family ran a plant nursery and her dad had collected the bulbs over his lifetime, many from overseas.
I also found a bulb lying on the sidewalk when I was in NYC over the Xmas holiday, which I pocketed and took home with me. It is putting up a bud as you can see here. From the looks of it, it is a hyacinth, but I’m curious to see exactly what it is.
I’m jealous. We had a good melt and now another 2 inches of snow fell over the weekend. I have a buncha new bulbs and three new perennials that I’m just dying to see. I predict at least 8-10 more weeks of winter before we see anything blooming around here. I can hardly wait to hit the garden stores!
My snowdrop are up, and a few are blooming! Spring can’t come soon enough; every year, I dread winter more and more. I planted snowdrops specifically to keep my sanity.
Daffodils? Those show up around June! Serious spring arrives around May up here, mud a bit earlier. And daffodils are my favorite flowers. I could buy some at the store but I kill plants, so no daffodils for me unless they get some already cut ones in.
I’m jealous of your daffodils, though I am one of those weirdos who likes winter and isn’t tired of it yet. I will be by the end of next month, though. I’m actually hoping for more snow, if only for the tourist business, seeing as I work at a ski resort.
My first response to this thread was, “SHUT UP! SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP!”
-15ºC or so here, with light flurries, for the next week (or three months - you never know). And then it rains for a month. We had a nice crop of ice coming up, though.
We don’t get a very long spring so I have to enjoy it while I can - by the middle of May we’ll be getting hot again, and by June it’s like living in a sauna.
Karyn, I prefer the Dutch Iris but the color of the first bearded iris you linked to is gorgeous. I have some yellow ones, which I dug up on the same trip when I got those daffodils - I don’t really like them but they have huge blooms. Also, I’m jealous of your redbud! I forgot to add that we have one dogwood tree, but it’s not blooming yet.
Almost everywhere else I’ve ever lived was in various southern places so I do understand this spring flowers in February. But I actually prefer it up here. Every time I get tired of a season, there’s a change that’s right around the corner.
I do miss early daffodils, though. I don’t miss humid Southern summers one bit!
Beautiful flowers. Lovely green leaves. Soft soil. The smell of turned earth. whimper
ahem Sorry about that.
Thanks. My aunt used to call us from Victoria around this time of year talking about the bulbs coming up, and meanwhile we’re sitting through another month of ice and snow. I just had a bit of a flashback when I saw your OP. It was a beautiful sunny mild day here in Toronto, which means that it was actually above freezing, and there was mud visible between the snow. People were out in droves walking around and enjoying the sun.
Now you’re just rubbing it in! Well, it warmed up some lately, so I do have I fine mudbog going. I almost lost my neighbor out in the soup in front of the house today. It’ll freeze again soon and thus be safe to walk across till the spring comes…around March 21. I do have some trees and shrubs on order from the state conservation folks; they should arrive mid-May.
My snow camellia are blooming again. They went on a brief hiatus for a couple weeks this winter, but I’ve seen a few new blossoms opening this weekend. Hopefully the sleet and wind we’re getting today won’t scare them off again. They’re tough little cusses.
