Two days ago the temperature was below freezing. Today it was in the 60s, and damn if my daffodils aren’t shooting up all over the place. Every year I’m shocked when they come up in late February or March when it’s still very cold. Every year I think they won’t make it, and they always do. But it’s January! I just barely got the bulbs in the ground.
I hope this means a short, mild winter because my heating bill this month was astronomical.
Little green shoots everywhere, I’m so mad at them! And my crinums!! Do they not know they’re eight dollar bulbs?!
Okay, so it was 70 today. But.
Bulbs can be so dumb! But I love 'em anyway.
My neighbors think I’m nuts. I have tulips planted all over my front lawn. I’m thinking of doing a 10 foot smiley face in daffodils in the center of the yard.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
that floats on high o’er vale and hills
when all at once I saw a crowd
a host of golden daffodils!
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
fluttering and dancing in the breeze!
And that’s all I remember. I had to learn it in grade school. I think the fact that Bullwinkle also recited it once helped me remember it.
I wish I could grow some bulb flowers. I have fond memories of my grandparents home in Wisconsin being surrounded by different colors of tulips.
Why can’t you? Tulips don’t return in the South, but plenty of bulbs do. Even if you don’t have a yard, you can totally grow bulbs in containers. You can even force them to bloom whenever you want them to!
I went out to run errands this morning, and found that overnight, thousands of purple and white crocus polkadotting my lawn, in the bright sunshine.
It made my day. How far behind could spring possibly be?
I haven’t seen any signs of our daffodils yet, but I do recall that some daffodil shoots were starting last year, they were snowed on, but they survived and bloomed in the spring. Take heart!
In the morning I’ll have to check the backyard to see if my snow drops are up. I planted some Lily of the Valley and some Asiatic Day Lilies and Hyacinths last fall and I can’t wait to see them, but not if they’re going to get killed off by the cold.
I hope everybodys bulbs make it OK.
My daffodils began to put up little shoots during a thaw in November. Since they’re in pots, I brought them into the house so the December frost wouldn’t kill them.
They’re all quite tall and green now, but none of them has bloomed.
Not only are they coming up everywhere around my house, I’ve got a big bowl of 'em blooming on my desk (from Trader Joes).
I’m so jealous! I won’t be seeing any sproutage for some time. Chicago is warmer than usual, but still pretty darned cold. Plus, we just had 10 inches of snow last week.
I know it’s possible to grow them here but I have a bit of a brown thumb. I’d love to try but I think I will wait until I have my house and porch set up a little more plant friendly and less “cats eat plants” friendly.
Bulbs are awesome because you don’t need a green thumb! I gave my boyfriend an amaryllis around Christmas and he was amazed that even he could grow one. It’s just that some of them have to be refrigerated (inside or outside) for a bit before you can plant them, otherwise they won’t grow. Anybody can do it; much easier than most plants.
As I read that, internally, I was using a Bullwinkle voice.
weeps softly
They’re daffy-dils! Waddaya expect, common sense? Sheesh.
