I’m intersted in becoming a professional firefighter. I wondering about the hiring process for the state of New Jersey. What do tests do I need to take, and where can I find a posting of professional departments that are hiring? How does being a vet affect the process?
I’ve tested for a few fire departments, and the process is usually pretty similar. Everyone who applies takes a written test. Then the top whatever % go on to interviews/ oral boards. From there you take a physical agility test and they make a hireable list based on all the scores. Many departments will give a veteran’s preference, but you typically have to make it onto the hireable list for it to matter. If you have any other certifications, those will help, too (EMT/Paramedic, HazMat, etc.)
Some departments require all applicants to have Firefighter I/II, and EMT-B/P before applying, but there’s no standard on that.
Here’s a link to some agencies that are hiring. Good luck!
