My family has a digital camera, but there is just something about getting pictures in actual print and arranging them in a photo album that I love. I know I can get the digial pictures printed on film, but they’re expensive! Also, I don’t even get to get my hands onto the digital camera since it’s shared within the family. So, I’ve decided to look into getting a film camera, especially since I’m heading out to Toronto in half a month and plan to take lots and lots of pictures. I’ve decided I want to spend about $150, or less. I’ve been looking some cameras up, and what really stood out was Fuji’s Q1 camera, but looking at the details, I noticed it was 24mm instead of 35mm, and it used a very type of battery. I think the only thing I like about it is it’s look.
Any recommendations on a good practical camera that looks nifty like the Q1, but, well, more practical?
Is this the camera in question? First off, it’s APS, not 35mm, which would kill any deal for me. APS isn’t worth it, smaller negative size, more expensive, lower availability. The lens size is misleading, since it’s APS (smaller negative) you need to do a conversion to get the equivilant 35mm lens sizes. I suspect it’s around a 38mm equiv lens.
A really good, feature filled, high quality P&S is the Olympus Stylus Epic. It’s small, sturdy, with an excellent fixed lens. A perfect basic camera, built around a great lens. Another similar camera for a little more money is the Yashica T4.
If you want zoom you’ll have to give a little more details about size of zoom you want and price range. But for a basic, non-zoom, 35mm camera, I don’t think you can beat either the Olympus Stylus Epic or the Yashica T4.
When I wanted a camera like that, I went Googling on camera reviews. The Olympus Stylus series always gets great reviews. I have an Olympus Stylus 80, and I get great pictures. There are good 35mm cameras out there for less than 150 bucks, just take a couple of hours and go searching on the net. I googled “35mm camera reviews” and that sort of led to “family cameras”, etc. I found several candidates, further googled on those for more reviews…
I find printing digital cheaper and easier than having traditional pictures printed. I had over 200 digital pictures printed the last time I was in the store for about 50 dollars…
I love the digital camera because I can take 2000 pictures and only print the ones I want. I can also see right away if the picture is worth saving/printing or needs to be retaken.
