Where should I go?
I need a small fairly powerful magnet (stronger than a refrigerator magnet) and I can’t think of who might carry them. Drugstore? Hardware store? Do they even sell them anymore?
Thanks in advance.

I would try a hardware store or a craft store.
Are you looking for a rare earth magnet?
If you want really, really strong magnets, United Nuclear has them. They also sell uranium.
Got any old speakers with a large bass woofer laying around? Rip into one and there’s your magnet.
Powerful? Absolutely. Fairly small? Not so much.
Radio Shack has a selection of magnets, if you have one near you. Fry’s probably does too. Otherwise, I’d try a hardware store.
I don’t know what you mean by small and strong but I have ordered a couple online. One is from The Magnet Store and it is only about an inch square and half an inch thick. It claims it can hold 40 pounds which I can believe but only under ideal conditions. The other is about the size of large candy bar and claims to hold 200 lbs. They are both certainly strong but I can break their hold if I lift at an angle.
Just Google “buy strong magnets” or something like that and their are plenty of options.
This is Geocaching related. I’m hoping to glue one on to a film canister so I can hide it behind a metal pole and I was hoping to pick one up on the way home today.
And umm, thanks Q.E.D. I’ll get back to you on that one…
American Science and Surplus. The best print catalog, period!

ASS is good, but The Electronic Goldmine is better, IMO.
Just go to ebay and put in Magnet. They have many very strong ones.
As I mentioned I was hoping to get one on the way home butthisis looking very promising!
Looks like a small DC motor magnet. Cool!
Buy an old hard drive off eBay and take it apart. You can even get the data from it as a bonus.
Previously posted link has those, too.
Here’s what I found at the Ace Hardware website. You might want to call your local hardware stores.
If you are handy with taking things apart dead hard drives will have approx lima bean or slighly larger sized magnets that are insanely powerful.
Toy store will have magnets.
kjmagnetics.com is a great web site for ordering very powerful magnets of all sizes, mostly of neodymium-iron-boron.
Ditto hardware stores. For some reason magnets usually seem to be near small measuring tools like protractors and calipers.
They make little metal boxes for hiding keys, that have a strong magnet attached. They’re intended for hiding a spare on the underside of your car. Don’t know how big they get or how large a cache container you want.
