I want to learn to play bridge

Actually I want to re-learn to play bridge, or improve my game drastically.

Years ago I learned to play using a few different computer programs. Which programs are around today, and which are the best? Ideally, I’d like one which will explain each move if you’d like it to.

Any ideas?

I’ve not used computer programs directly to learn bridge, so can’t offer any advice there. I’ve played a bit with a program called ‘Jack’ which is very good for advanced play, but I’ve not seen it’s capabilities for teaching - I’ll ask my friend who owns the copy I played with.

What you might consider, though, is bridgebase online. This is the largest online bridge site in the world and a focal point of the game in some ways. It’s free to use and simple to get started - you could just launch into it and start playing if you wanted to (could be a bit overwhelming).
Maybe better, though, is to use features of the site that enable teaching. If you know some friends who play Bridge and are happy to give a bit of instruction, then you can start a private table and play at your own pace with a lot of discussion etc. There is also a specific beginners lounge (not played there myself) that probably has a lot of mentoring features.

I’d be happy to play some hands with you if you like, as I’m sure other bridge players on the SD would be too. Online is a good way of playing at your own convenience, especially if there is not a club / circle of bridge-playing mates to hand.

If there is room for another bridge noobie in some sort of starter game, I am interested as well…

You might want to establish what method of bidding you are using. I’m not sure that I know how to describe this.

I learned to play in the 1960s – not really well, but well enough to play with more than one group of people. Then I didn’t play much outside of the family for about twenty years. When I recently began to play bridge at my Club, I found that for the last fifteen or twenty years, a slightly different style of bidding has become popular.

I’m going to take three or four lessons to find out what that is about before the month is over.

Bridge is that kind of game. Forty-five years later and I’m still taking a beginners’ class. It’s a wonderful game though. I should be much better at it. My memory is a real problem.
