I want to understand more about engines.

I’ve recently become interested in motorcycling and understand the very basics of the internal combustion engine, but want to know a lot more. I’d like to know more about what makes for more power, how adding more cylinders changes various equations, how the set up of the cylinders changes the output. I suppose I need a lesson that is part physics, part engineering. I also want to learn about carbs, fuel injects, how exhausts work, what the gear box REALLY looks like. I want to understand the damn
bike. Aside from taking my bike apart, what can I do to better understand the details? Any books on the subject? It would be really helpful to see a real working engine cutaway and an actual gear box. I’ve read the How Stuff Works articles but I must know more!
