True, he’s a scumbag, but all he did was steal a kiss outside a nightclub and then thought better of the rest of his plan.
The theme of that episode was that everyone on the team was sneaking alien tech out of Torchwood and using it for selfish purposes and then more or less learning their lesson. Something like that. I haven’t seen it in ages either.
Thinking of Torchwood reminds me of Painkiller Jane for some reason. I actually liked that show about as well as Torchwood.
Ok, I actually went and watched this scene on the DVD, and it’s kind of ambiguous. He does use the spray on both the woman and the boyfriend. Then he says “Taxi!” and the scene ends. I can’t tell from his expression exactly how he feels. He is smiling after the boyfriend kisses him, but I guess it could be a confused/ shocked smile?
I interpreted it as “Taxi! I need a ride home so I can fuck both of these people!” Given how everyone on the show is bisexual, and Owen deliberately used the spray on the boyfriend, I don’t think this is a crazy interpretation. If this is the case, I think he definitely is a (double) rapist.
However, I can see how it could be interpreted as “Taxi, get me the hell out of here! This is a bad idea!” In which case, you are right.
I think we can agree that he is a scumbag either way.
I tried to watch Torchwood, but honestly there wasn’t a single character on the show who I wouldn’t mind seeing run over by a bus. That includes Jack, granted he’d get back up afterward. Children of Earth was actually halfway decent however.
I imagine the couple went home, then woke up with horrible headaches & confusion about how they got there. Later, the guy ran into Owen in a pub & punched his lights out. (Cardiff being a rather small city.) Although he really didn’t know why.
I came to appreciate Owen at the end. Gwen could certainly be irritating & I found Ianto a bit wet. How can Torchwood save the world when they can’t keep their pants on?
When* Torchwood* is good it is really good; when it is bad it’s just silly. Worth catching on Netflix Streaming–which also carries Starz!
I have taken this suggestion and have skipped ahead to the first two episodes of Children of Earth (after watching the finale of season 2). You’re not kidding. It’s like the difference between the really crappy and the really great episodes of Doctor Who.
So, I’m one of the minority who really, really likes Gwen. I like most of the other characters too (well, that’s not accurate, I like watching them) except Ianto. His relationship with Jack was never very believable to me, not after the CyberGirlfriend episode. Don’t know why, I don’t have a problem with bisexuality or anything like that.
But also, and unrelated to the main point: Gwen, oh, I would tap that. I would tap that like a line of kegs at Oktoberfest.
We did as well. That he turned on the burly boyfriend was unintended, but he decided that a rowdy threesome had just as much potential. That’s why the guy punched him later: hazy memories of a one night stand/threesome. We actually found Owen to be one of the more interesting characters because he WAS such a selfish sleazeball and so morally capricious. Edit: we also felt that he raped both with the alien equivalent of slipping them a rufi.
I also wanted to slap Gwen’s googly eyes right off her face. However, I will admit she started to grow on me, and became “less loathsome” after while. I don’t think she was supposed to be so annoying. We haven’t watched much beyond early season two, however. Some episode where they started showing bits and pieces of Jack’s childhood memories. I didn’t really want to know Jack’s origin story, so we stopped watching with the intention of picking it up again later.
I agree with all this, especially the bits about Ianto and Jack and tapping Gwen. My only problem was it was a bit uneven. Also Children of Earth was, by far, the best thing they ever did.
I liked Gwen fine, but I understand Gwen hate. I see her as a good “in over her head but tries to do what needs doing” character, but she’s occasionally written as a hanger-on. I’m forgiving.
Torchwood seasons 1 and 2 were definitely problematically uneven. So is Doctor Who, of course, but Torchwood wobbling between dark, gritty, and adult and, well, goofy is a tough pill to swallow. I still found it enjoyable, but there’s few episodes I really want to rewatch. I thought 2 was generally an improvement, especially since they made the plot actually start mattering.
Children of Earth was good enough to justify the first two series.
It’s weird that the BBC isn’t showing Miracle Day until after it’s shown in the US. I know Starz chucked some money in and got the exclusive US distribution rights but it’s still a BBC production. I find that mildly annoying.
It’s shallow, I know, but I’ve always found her diastema to be really off-putting. You’d think that some kind of superior alien dental appliance might have tumbled through the Rift at some point, but I guess they’ve had more luck finding things that could kill everyone on the planet. I can’t say the character bugs me all that much, though.
Do you mean the gap between her two front teeth? I think it’s really attractive. It’s not like her teeth are manky or anything - they’re to US brilliant white blinding standards - but they stop her looking like every other identikit Hollywood celebrity.
Madonna had the same thing.
It would be a damn shame if she got that fixed. It’d be a step on the road to blandness.
Mr. Smaje and I make SO much fun of that gap. True, it’s kinda sexy in a Lauren Hutten way, but I’ll use any ammo to make fun of Gwen.
I don’t know why I keep watching Torchwood. I hate Jack, I hate Gwen, I hate Owen, I want to punch Tosh in her face. I think it’s 'cause I love Ianto. And Doctor Who. But it creeps me out how much they all just want to f**k each other all the time.
Not sure how interested I am in the new Torchwood, since only Jack and Gwen are returning, right? But I heard one of the Bills (Paxton? Pullman?) is in the new one, so maybe I’ll check it out.
Gwen suffered from being the typical character who is totally out of their depth and the conscience of the group. Basically like Counselor Troi, just not completely useless.
Ianto got better and was more useful throughout the series.
