Thought I’d get in first. Wow - what an explosive start to the second series! And I thought the last one raised the bar on hyper-omni sexuality. I’m especially excited about the “coming in this series” montage at the end, it all looked good.
It was good. I wish they’d stop it with the sexuality overload, it’s not what I tune in to see and the preview implies there’ll be a bunch more of those soap operatics, doggone it. But the alien chasing is still cool, and this Captain John Vampire-face was a nice foil.
There was an interesting interview with Russell T. Davies on BBC3. It covered a lot of his career, but he did talk about Dr. Who.
He thought it was now so established as a success that it would keep going forever (maybe with ‘breaks’).
He said they knew that Christopher Ecclestone would only do one series, but that they wanted a serious actor to set the tone for the relaunch. Apparently David Tennant is heading off to play Hamlet. (No news on the successor.)
It was important to have spin-off shows (since one show is too easy to cancel  ).
Torchwood is for adults, Dr. Who is for the family, Sara-Jane is for kids.
He didn’t think it would actually be a success (because who watches Sci-fi on Saturday nights.)
I enjoyed it but thought it was getting a little bit ‘Hollyoaks’. They really seem to hit you over the head with the sexuality and it feels like it’s just been chucked in there because it’s ‘late night’ and ‘adult’.
I did think the kiss then fight scene was hilarious though.
Yes, which is why they’re having only movie specials in 2009 - the first scheduled “break”. Tennant **may ** be leaving the role, but not until he’s done with Hamlet and has a couple more episodes of Doctor Who under his belt after.
Good news, because I think Tennant has overtaken Baker as the best Doctor.
Of course any Doctor would have loved to have the script of ‘Blink’ to perform.
Quite an appropriate description of the montage, given the content of the show
I gave it another go, for the last ten odd minutes and it came across much the same as before. In fact, I’d say Doctor Who is more enjoyable for adults, Torchwood with its snogging, guns and poorly modded vehicles is more likely to appeal to those in their early teens.
No kidding…pixelated? I see episodes of Dr Who and Torchwood once a month at a friend’s house, via burned DVD.
I don’t know how he does it (and quite pointedly have not asked), but we see the shows just as they air in Blighty, on the “real” BBC, without the editing for time, commercials, or sexual content.
Fuck no! Do you know how many threads I’ve seen that talk about a show that’s aired in America that I can’t go into because it won’t be available to watch here for months and they don’t contain spoilers? A billion. At least.
I thought the new guy was nice eye candy, but overall, I think I much preferred the Christmas Who special… I’m very lukewarm on Torchwood lately - great videography and effects, but the stories seem to be going downhill.
It’s kinda fun having a Scot play an American and an American doing a Brit (though both are neither, of course). James Marsters is beginning to show his age.
I think slashers are squeeing with delight at the fanfic thought of Spoike and Cap’n Jack.
Well, I can’t speak for other Americans, but if I go wandering into a discussion thread for an episode that won’t air over here for a couple of weeks, I’d be deranged if I didn’t expect spoilers.
