I was into __________ before it was cool.

PORN

Oh, me too! I used to watch it on the Asian-language station in the Bay Area. It’s a really odd station, it shows completely random stuff in every Asian language. 30-minute Indian music videos, Chinese soap operas, Japanese soap operas, Persian talk shows, and once upon a time…Iron Chef. On Saturdays at 9 pm. Without dubbing, just strangely worded subtitles. This would have been in…1995 or so.

Or go on IRC.

I remember the days when I’d ask about Mp3’s in chat rooms and such, and people would say “You mean Mp5, the submachine gun”.

“masturbation”

Am I imagining things, or were there mp2’s before mp3’s?

Yes, there were mp2’s - I still have a couple of them.

The “Shaved Head with a Goatee” look.

Damn poseurs.

One day, way back in that prehistoric era known as the 1980’s, I went to school wearing a blazer over a t-shirt. I thought it looked pretty cool. Unfortunately, the rest of my classmates thought this was the stupidest thing they’d ever seen, and mocked me all day.

Three months later, Miami Vice hit the screens. Guess what everyone was wearing then?

Wankers.

I used to watch Ricky Gervais on the 11 o’ clock show and thought he was the funniest guy ever. That was a good couple of years before The Office came along. Tch.

Bruce Springsteen (I remember when he had a cult following)

cappuccino (have had some sort of espresso maker for 25 years)

growing herbs in general, and making pesto in particular, been enjoying them since a teen–for more than 30 years

Urban backpacks.

In 1979 I left Manhattan to go to grad school in Colorado, where I found that I could keep my books, my lunch, my etc in one of this hiking things that people wore out there, and still have my hands free.

I came back to Manhattan on vacation in the summer of '80, and all my friends mocked me, called it a goiter, a growth–one particularly trendy jerk literally refused to walk with me on upper Broadway because of how geeky I looked.

“Cocooning”

NASCAR. Yeah, ok, it’s still not “cool,” but it’s a heck of a lot more mainstream than 30 years ago

Me too - right from the beginning.

Also - country music (from way back in the late 60s, a good ten years before “crossover country” and Urban Cowboy).

eBay.

Polymer clay, crocheting, scrapbooking – loads of handcrafts.

Tom Wolfe since 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." I told everyone how good he was, and ten years later they all agreed.

Andrew Lloyd Webber since “Jesus Christ Superstar.” LONG before CATS and POTO.

Mountain Biking.

1982…no space-age aluminum alloys or suspensions. Basically, just a high-carbon-steel 10-speed modified to accept 26x2.125 tires.

It was what a BMX wanted to be when it grew up…man, it was a tank.

I listened to and enjoyed The Hives five years ago.

Late 60s? You’re just a kid! “Why, I remember when Hank was a boy…” Or the 50s anyway. I was brought up on country.

Same with me. And Dark Side was a step back, too.

Hill Street Blues (from the first episode)

B. Kliban (well before “Cat”)

Andrew Lloyd Weber. I saw the first North American performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at my old high school (it didn’t get to Broadway until nearly four months later) and got caught up in it. I don’t care for him all that much any more, though.

Bruce Springsteen. I reviewed his first album for our college radio station (it was sitting, being ignored) and immediately recommended we start playing it. I also saw him in concert when he was doing small venues (ours was about 1000).
