Yea, that’s right! What did you do this weekend? I drove to Paris… yea, Paris freakin France. That city is amazing! This morning I even attended mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral. Hell, that’s even incredible for an atheist.
I saw all the major sights, the Arch, the Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, and about four dozen other old ass buildings–the names of which I have no idea!! I didn’t really know what half the places were. I didn’t have a tour guide or anything. It was just my wife and I driving (and walking) around the city. I only had the weekend, so we spent maybe a total of 27 hours in Paris counting sleep. I can’t wait to go back there when I have more time to spend!!! I really saved the best trip for last, that’s for sure. My past weekends have been spent in Prague, Munich (Oktoberfest), Nurnburg, Fusson (Neuschwanstein Castle), a little village called Flossenburg, and now Paris, France.
Next trip will be to a small village in Italy just north of Genoa call Nenno!! I can’t wait to go there. I’ll check out Genoa (Columbus’s childhood home) and my namesake village all in the same weekend. Unfortunately that will have to wait until next year, though.
Anyway, I just really had an awesome time in Paris. Thought I’d share.
That it must be. I didn’t get to see mass, but Notre Dame de Paris is the most beautiful church I’ve ever seen, and I am a bit of a connoisseur. Sacre Coeur (also Paris) and il Duomo in Florence came pretty damn close, though.
You did climb the stairs to see the Galerie des Chimères, right? There’s a reason everyone takes this picture - it’s breathtaking.
You can’t have had much time in the Louvre, though, but then again neither did I. Next time I’m going to have three days in there.
Oh, what I did this weekend? Played cards in between working nights. Thanks for asking.
I’ll go back to Paris when I can spend more time. I also noticed there’s a Disneyland there. I’ve got to go. If for no other reason than to say that I’ve been to Disney land in California and in Europe, but I’ve never been to Disney World… and I grew up an hour from there!! Ha!
Have you been to St Vitus Cathedral in Praque? That church is goregous.
No There was a really long line outside the church. But the entrance was divided " <— Mass / Visitors —> ". There was no line on the left. So I was like, “Baby, let’s go to mass”. So we went in and sat down. Listened to some sermon in “Latin? French?” and some really, surreal gospel (hymnal? whatever, it was signing). I’ve got a little video of it. I’ll post a link tomorrow.
But anyway, I didn’t get to go up the stairs or even walk around the back of the church. I just went and sat down at the benches. I lit a candle on the way out and then dodged all the damn gypsies back to the parking garage.
In?? LOL! No, I said I saw it. Hell, I don’t think we even got out of the car for that one. A lot of our touring was just driving around and taking pictures. Kinda like those huge tourist busses, except we were in our own car. Today we drove around to see as much as we could in what little time we had left. Thank god for GPS! I needed to leave the city by 2pm to get back home at a decent hour. But yesterday we were on foot. We walked around the Millenium Square… or whatever the place with the ferris wheel is called; walked along the river to the tower, walked into the city and through some big park. Plus we took a couple wrong turns, which really sucks on foot. We walked for HOURS. Actually, the first wrong turn was a block from our hotel room. I think we were like a 20 minute walk from the Tower, and it took us 3 hours to find it!!!
That thing is shorter than I thought. And, surprisingly, you can’t see if from everywhere. There’s always a building in the way.
I’ve be to Disneyland, Disney World and Euro Disney.
It’s definetly a trip. I thought I was more like Dinsey Canada because it is partly in French and part English.
Though when the Pirates of the Carribbean ride stalled they announcement played in French, English, Spainsh, German, Flemmish? Sweedish? Portugese? Italian and Russian.
No. I’ve been to Prague once but didn’t have time to do the tourist thing, and last time I was in the vicinity I flipped a coin to see if I’d go to Vienna or Prague, and Vienna won. Thanks for the tip, though; Prague is definitely on my list of cities I want to visit.
Can’t say that I’ve been to Paris, but it was a pretty good weekend all the same.
At the end of a week at a conference in Dublin at the Dublin Castle, I picked up my rental car on Saturday morning and drove to the Kilkenny area to begin the vacation portion of my trip. I spent two days there (and getting there). The M50 was a bit challenging with its roadworks, and as a result I saw more of the country than I initially intended on Saturday. The Kells Priory ruins were stunning, and I think I enjoyed them even more than the Kilkenny Castle due to the complete absence of “officialness” to them. I’d also add in addition to the fact that it is a very beautiful country, people are very kind to lost Canadians. They drive very quickly too.
All drives through Paris pale in comparison with this.
Sounds like my itinerary from a few years ago. My company sent me to live in Nürnburg for three months. I did weekend trips to Vienna, Munich, Prague, Berlin, Paris, and a few others, like Neuschwanstein. I took trains almost exclusively. The night train to Paris, drop my luggage at the hotel; saw sunrise over the Champs Elysses, Eiffel Tower, random exploring, dinner, more walking past all the Christmas lights and the Pompidou Centre, sleep, the Louvre, the air and space museum at Le Bourget, subway to the hotel, grab my suitcase, taxi to the station and I caught my train by one minute. Hell of a town.
If you want a church with a view, you might check out the Ulmer Münster (the protestant cathedral in Ulm, a catholic cathedral is a dom), tallest church in the world, and for a couple euros you can climb almost to the top.
I got pleanty of pics from Prague and the St Vitus on my photobucket.
Just choose the city from the folders. One hell of a city and another great time that was. But, man, I still haven’t stopped thinking about Paris!!
Robot Arm, yup that’s pretty much what I’ve been doing, too! I took a train once or twice, but driving is so much more fun and much, much more flexible. Plus the trip there actually becomes part of the vacation!
And besides… I’m only paying $0.77 (US) per liter, so the gas is affordable.
Oh well, fun’s over for now. I have to get back to work starting tomorrow!!
Darn, I missed the stairs to go up when I was there a few months ago. I spent 18 hours in Paris (counting 8 of sleep) on my way from Uruguay to Bangkok.
My friend Sara took me for a quick and lovely tour, Notre Dame, a walk along the Seine, a nice dinner at a small restaurant on a narrow street and a night visit to the Eiffel Tower.
