I was on KGO today

So I know I’m now a grownup because I listen to AM radio :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve called in on KGO (bay area) and gotten on the radio twice. Maybe I’m unprepared or something because both times have been very brief; I’ve said my piece and the host replies curtly then moves on.

The first time was when Pat Thurston was talking about how a group of doctors/dentists were providing free health care at the Oakland colosseum. I called in mentioning how much of a privelege health care (in the form of job benefits) is and how surreal it is for it to even be a privelege and not a right. Pat pointed out the problem is insurance itself :smack: Guess I should’ve said health CARE and not insurance.

The second time was today. They were talking about how they contracted some Chinese firm to make a bridge they are going to build. The Chinese firm is going to make the steel prefabricated parts, ship it here, and we will assemble it. A lot of people were calling in saying stuff like (boo, chinese stuff sucks, boo!) and it kind of reminded me of back in the 80s when people were freaked out about the Japanese taking over on the global stage, and how that panned out in the long run. The host, Ron Owens, pointed out a bunch of differences I personally was not aware of between the Japan of the 80s and the China of now, and quickly moved on.

I’m happy I got to be on the radio twice, though I guess I’m not used to the fast-paced nature of being a caller. Some callers can go back and forth with the host for a while, but I guess its by being just controversial enough for the host to disagree, but not so out there that the host disregards it. Not that I’m complaining; I have the humility to be okay with getting smacked down intellectually on the radio (“Oh, ok, I did not know that!” type of civility). I guess being on the Dope so long kind of taught me no matter how much you know, there’s probably someone out there that knows way more than you, and has 10x cites backing up their claim!

You called in to offer a relevant comparison and the host had facts at the ready which he felt evidenced a distinction between the current situation and the former? This is obviously some new trend in talk radio, and deserves further investigation.

I was on NPR twice. It was one of their quiz shows; you can hear me in the background calling out the answer after everyone on the panel missed it.

Jesus Christ, Ronn Owens is still on KGO? Hasn’t it been like 30 years?

Ronn Owens is one of the better radio hosts. He doesn’t have an ideological agenda.

Exactly 30 years, I think. They just had a celebration.

I listen to Ronn online every day at work. He had a great show a couple of days ago; Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez were on talking about their new movie–they could hardly stop laughing the whole time. After that he had Peter Asher, who had some interesting stories about his time in the music industry and his relationship with Paul and the Beatles.
