I was wrong and you were right. [Trump-related]

In the last few days…Trump…
…Did the Muslim Ban thing.
Has hung up on the Australian Prime Minister.
Has gotten the Prime Minister of Canada to accept all refugees.
Has threatened Mexico with invasion
…and I don’t even want to think about what I read happened in Yemen.
I’m sorry for this topic. I was wrong. I was wrong not to vote. I was wrong in thinking it doesn’t matter or that it’s pointless. I very humbly apologize.
I will register to vote and start voting and I will definitely be voting four years from now… that is, if we’re still all alive in four years. Or if we still have the right to vote. I wish I had done it before, in this election. I’m sorry I didn’t.
I was definitely in the wrong and wanted you all to know I admit it and feel bad and sorry over it.

That’s all.

Brave admission, and good for you. It reflects well on you that you’ll change strongly held beliefs based on changing circumstances around you.

Good for you!

Please start voting sooner than that.

That is most excellent. Go and sin no more.

ETA: Yes, vote in the Congressional elections in 2 years, too.

Agree, but if he lives in the big city there is a good chance that his representative is a Democrat already (Yes, even in a red state many times the cities do get blue representatives). I think we should concentrate on (besides voting) into helping fund candidates that oppose Trump and the reprehensible new policies in areas that currently have Trump rubber stampers as representatives (while being a dying breed, there are still Republicans that do put country before Trump).

This is a brave and mature post, but you should be voting in your local elections and in the 2018 Congressional elections, they are our first chance to change course.

Thank you, Idle Thoughts, for declaring your intention to live a better life, or at least a more politically active one. You’ve probably done it already, but just in case you haven’t, you can register to vote online in Arizona: Voter Registration in Arizona | DMV.ORG
And please do vote in the little elections.

It’s ok, buddy. What you do politically doesn’t matter. One of the bad things about democracy is that it makes people feel like they are a part of the governing body. They aren’t. The government is a small minority of the shittiest people imaginable.

Did you vote for or promote any particular candidates?

Yes. I vote in self defense, but I’m always defeated by the leviathan state. I didn’t promote any candidate particularly.

Ignore the child.

My friend, you may be sorry now, but that is going to pale in the wave of rights and freedoms we’re about to lose under Donald John Trump and Field Marshall Jefferson Beauregard Sessions. I don’t see a shooting war, only because I think the Generals are smart enough not to, and hopefully strong enough to resist his temper tantrums. But I see a trade war coming that will leave the US, and the world in a major world wide recession. Trump just isn’t smart enough to win a trade war against Asia and South America.

Yeah, you and a slew of others who were complacent have more than likely set America back to the political stone ages. And there’s not a fucking thing anyone can do but suffer and pray that age and debility are allies in our battle against this cretin.

Except it is democracy that is the fairy tale we tell children. From knee-high, we bombard them with images and myths of the Great America. Then they grow up to be Donald Trump.

Yeah, when WillFarnaby is the one saying you were right, it’s a good thing you’ve changed course.

This thread, however, constitutes nothing. Since you’re responsible for Trump, pledging to vote once every four years is the least you can do. You should’ve been doing that anyway. Here’s what you can do to make up for lost opportunity:

-Vote in every election you can, from city council through president.
-Call your senators at least once a week. Let them know what you want them to do on specific issues.
-Pay attention to the news.

And that is why instead of MAGA it is MAJE.

I don’t want to fluff the OP, nor do I want to run him down. I would just like to comment on the fact that if someone with such strongly held beliefs has turned away from them based on Trump’s actions… then what the hell is taking the rest of the intelligent people who still back him? Congress I’m looking at you.

Then report back to us on your newfound political influence.

Seriously, the absurdity of thinking that paying attention to the news does anything to influence the government is a bit much even for starry-eyed democracy lovers.

Maybe they still back him because they agree with his actions? It is a possibility, you know.

I take Idle Thoughts’ point but at least he can console himself with the fact that his vote would not have made the slightest bit of difference. And, yes, I know, if everyone thought like that, etc. But this thread is about Idle Thoughts.

Ignore the clown upthread. The barrier to entry to making an impact is fantastically low.

What you’re not going to do: get steak dinner with your US Senators tonight

What you will be able to do, basically overnight:

  • Get together fifteen of your friends who are also mad as hell (this is what social media makes easy)
  • If you coordinate calling and letter-writing, that will elevate issues that you care about above the background noise
  • If all of you show up to your House rep’s small town event with that message you’ll give them a good scare
  • If you each knock doors and talk to your neighbors for one day you’ll have the power to turn a lot of local, low-turnout races
  • Today’s city council are tomorrow’s state leg, which indirectly control how elections are run
  • Today’s state leg are tomorrow’s US Congress

A key plank of the Trump electoral strategy was to try to encourage apathy and helplessness among moderates and the left. Don’t give him your tacit support. It’s more important now than ever.

edit: There is already a local club of people in your neighborhood called ‘the Democratic Party’ that can help you get started with this. Good luck!
