I weakly Pit websites whose pages take too frackin' long to load

Worst offenders: Amazon.com and the Washington Post. Trying to fit too much content on one page, is that the problem?

I pit websites with too much ‘user interface’ gimmickery. One of the worse offenders is menus that pop up (and cover something) when you mouse-over them.
Mice have buttons for a reason. Nothing should have mouseover behaviour. Not even to show a little yellow hint.

Their pages are rather light in content (articles). There’s just too much gimcrackery.

That’s certainly a factor, but some pages are dynamicly created for each request and are poorly coded to do so. I’m thinking of all the account pages for GoDaddy, which have relatively little need for current content rearranging, yet use PHP to generate each page. This takes time.

Top notch programming strikes a balance between speed and flexibility, and caches stuff that takes a long time to generate but doesn’t need to be regenerated often. But most companies don’t want to pay for top notch programming, so the users suffer.

The problem is that professional web designers tend to have the belliest, whistliest computers available, which load and process such files faster than mine. THAT’S the standard of processing they’re designing for.

YES! years ago, AMG used to be great and useful, but then they redesigned the perfectly working site to make it more bellsy and whistley. Now it just sucks. Great content; crappy delivery.

I think it’s because most modern commercial websites usually have about 3-5 flash based ads on each page. Those take time and your computer’s resources to load and display. Even this particular thread has a flash-based ad. They’re resource hogs.

The SDMB crashes the browser on my Blackjack phone on about 50% of the threads I open.

I have disabled Flash, Java and all other fancy stuff. Any site which uses that I do not need to see. Keeps my computer safe too.

What’s going on with foodnetwork.com? That’s the only site I can think of that always takes ages for me.

I heart GoDaddy big time but their interface is atrocious.

I keep trying to tell myself that I get my domain names so cheap because they sell so much stuff and thus have to advertise so much stuff but…all I ever want to do is access my domain names, not buy one of their crazy products. Every single time I log in and click “Domain Manager” the Domain Manager times out before it loads and I have to refresh. Every. Single. Time.

It’s like realizing your one and only true love is really nothing but a sleazy car salesman. It pains me deeply.

Yeah, they’ve really mucked it up not long ago - used to be almost tolerable, but now, it’s the Timeout Diner.

Amazon loads in the blink for an eye for me.

My peeve are restaurant websites, 94% of which are some hideous Flash zoom-zoom format. Hint: I should not have to hit 3 links to find your phone # to make a reservation!

Here here. I love the whizbang of gmail but I hate how long it takes to load. I wish there was a way cache that stuff without having to reload it every time I restart firefox.
