I work late, I'm a Night Owl, and I'm SICK of people waking me up in the morning!

If you look back at the thread, you’ll notice that I and one or two other people were willing to let one instance of assholitude slip by, assuming just that. It was when you began defending your previous assholery that people got pissed.

Well, I guess this is where we’ll have to agree to disagree. Like I mentioned before, I went for a year and a half plus getting enough sleep and waking up early, and never adjusted.

Of course I can get up early and funtion when needed, otherwise I never would have survived school; my point is that it never becomes easy or second nature. The instant the pressure to do this disappears, I go right back to my usual schedule.

So stick that up your ass and smoke it.

When I worked nights I used to just unplug the goddam phone before I went to bed. For family and close friends I have a pager. But if you page me out of my favorite dream and your nuts aren’t on fire, I’ll fix it so they are.

There is one bonus about working late. When Saturday night rolls around you can party with the big dogs. About the time everybody else is dropping into a coma you will just be hitting high gear. Everybody will think you’re a full time savage. Besides, it’s kinda fun being just slightly more sober than the rest of the crowd.

I do my best work at night. 'Nuff said.

Matt_mcl, this is SO my life. In fact, until I met my husband and started sleeping with him (actually sleeping), I thought that everybody lay in bed for 2-3 hours minimum before falling asleep. He’s one of those bastards who falls asleep in 60 secods or less.

Also, I’d like to point out to RickJay after his endless mocking of Yosemitebabe for her comparison of homosexuality to nightowlitude: it was MATT_MCL who said it, she was just quoting him. As for Matt’s expertise ofn homosexuality and the prejudices that go with it, you’ll just have to ask him.

Thanks Brunetter!

And to further clarify the homosexuality/nightowlhood thing:

Matt’s original comparison (and the one I elaborated upon) was something like this:

Oblivious Jerk #1: “I’m straight, and I know that all those homosexuals are just not trying hard enough to be ‘normal’ like me!”
Oblivious Jerk #2: “I’m a morning person, and I know that all those night owls are just not trying hard enough to be ‘normal’ like me!”

And, RickJay, your previous behavior (being obnoxious, “just for fun”) is a bit trollish. Taking a obnoxious stance, baiting people, just to get a rise out of them? That was basically what you were doing - being trollish. (I’m not calling you a troll, mind, just saying you displayed trollish behavior on this thread.) Hey - one or two posts would have been one thing (and I suspected you were being trollish from the beginning) but you carried it too far, hun. Oh well. Just try being yourself from now on - I’m sure you have actual genuine opinions that you could share on this board.

Me too! Let’s see… 12 years of school didn’t change my sleeping habits. Probably a combined 5 years of working “normal hours” didn’t change my sleeping habits. I’ve had major problems with being tired all of the time before switching to a night job, where at least I was working at my most productive time. It’s great that some people can adjust their schedule at will. Yippee for you. I’ll go find a medal for you to wear or something. To assume that every single person in the world can takes some really big balls. Shall I start some inane list of things that I can and cannot do and them make the same assumptions about every other person that has ever lived? Hardly a display of intelligence.

I have adapted my schedule, yes. It meant living on way less sleep, to the point of experiencing hallucinations and other products of sleep deprivation. Over the years, I have managed to change my schedule from going to sleep at 5 am to 2 am. So, some evolution did occur. It certainly wasn’t easy, and it has taken many years to do so.

Having said all of that, I tend to be fairly tolerant of day people. Go ahead, mow your lawn after 9am. I’ll sleep with the pillow over my head. I turn down the music after 9 pm. Having experienced discrimination against night people, I don’t think that the solution is being intolerant of day people. The world runs on a daytime schedule, and I accept that. I would get pissed off if someone kept waking me up when they know I’m asleep (as several people here have that problem), but for the most part, I expect people who KNOW me not to call early in the morning, and I promise not to call at 2 am, even though I’m still up.

Even I am am not so brave as to try and wake Lola before 9am and it is for my own good that I leave her alone until at least ten.

It is at ten am that she undegoes the remarkable transformation from the princess of darkness to the lovely woman that she is.

Ever since I was a small child I have been a night person, this has not changed to this day. I have had to adapt because of children and my work schedule but if it were not for that I would still be up until 3am and sleeping until 11am.

Now, if I could just get Lola to go to sleep with the lights off…

Same here. Im only 12, and I have 2 younger siblibs who are “normal”. My mom thinks that my sleeping pattern just has to do with video games, and though time and time again I tell her about the science, she doesnt believe me. I have to go to bed at 10PM and wake up at 7AM every day for school (6PM when this upcoming school yr starts because Im taking Algebra in high school.) The catch, though, is that I never fall asleep until about 3AM. Luckily, its summer for now, but now she wants me to wake up at 8AM and start writing essays for my summer work. Like SERIOUSLY! (Also, Im not supposed to be on my Ipad at night, so Im sneakily writing right now because how can she except me to sit in my bed for 5 hrs doing nothing?! You should see some of the stuff I do at night. Usually, I plan out hundreds of possible conversasions that I might have the next day. Thats how bored I am)

Also, Im so tired when I wake up after sleeping for 3-4hrs that I usually just lie in bed for an hr doing nothing. And dont even get me started on doing schoolwork. I just wish that I was allowed to drink coffee. Also, I always end up feeling really depressed the entire day, and sometimes I just start crying for almost no reason. Tomorrow, Im gonna ask my mom if I can try my dad’s Neuro Sleep drink. Ive heard good reviews about it, and it apparently contained 6times the amount of melatonin that the body needs to fall asleep. Fingers crossed I can sleep more than 3 hours tomorrow!

Hello ChaseMooncheese, and welcome to the Straight Dope. You do realize that the last time any of the people you’re responding to posted in this thread was about four years before you were born, right? :dubious: Just saying, you maybe shouldn’t be holding your breath for the conversation to pick up where it left off in 2000.

Unfortunately we won’t be seeing much more of ChaseMooncheese as the minimum age for posting on the Dope is 13. Downer, I know, but rules is rules.

I was gonna say, maybe by the time he’s 13 he’ll discover some fun things to do in bed at night.

The minimum age here is 13. Come back next year.

oddly enough being up all night is why I came here in the first place … I used to be up for days (to the point id get shots to go to sleep) with nothing to do so I started trolling the net and looking around for this and that on aol and aol used to have this “random” feature where you would type in the word random and theyed take you to some of the lesser known sites

and when the straight dope moved I followed along and hung out on the board at night

I agree and can relate. People and door-to-door salesmen in my building think it’s okay to ring my doorbell at 8 AM. It makes me livid.

Granted, I have a full-time job with “normal” hours now, but I know what it’s like, due to my night-owl freelance years.

I doubt if he’s under 13. He seems to have succeeded in spamming his product though.

I wonder what he will be selling then.
