IBS and Trial-and-Error Remedies

[required disclaimer: I have checked previous threads]

I just saw a GI guy and my plague for the last several years is in fact IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). He described it as a disturbance of nervous system coordination with the bowels. Since I have Irritable Everything Syndrome (fibromyalgia), I’m not surprised. My nervous system is very sensitive in numerous ways, and a few things related to the vagus nerve go whacky for me.

The doctor was decidedly unhelpful regarding remedies I might try, but suggested trial-and-error approaches. I would very much like to hear from other IBS patients with…er…excessive motility, as to what helps them. What lifestyle changes or diet changes are helpful for you? I’d sure like to know what else I might be doing, especially because I’ll be travelling by air in two weeks.

In my case I’ve had to give up coffee completely this week. I still have some problems, although not as severe. I’m now trying a tablespoon of ground flaxseed in the morning, for the bulk as well as its other benefits. Someone told me that this, alone, resolved her problems.

What has helped you?
