I’m staying at my father’s while he is in rehab after having a pacemaker installed. He has a side by side refrigerator/freezer. I did not notice that the freezer door was not closed all the way for at least 12 hours When I opened it this morning there was a layer of light fluffy ice. What is the quickest and safest way to get rid of this ice?
If it’s a frost free freezer which most refrigerator units are and yours surely is then you can just close the door and wait. If it’s keeping the door from sealing just wipe it off with a cloth and warm water, then wipe it dry. It’s not going to be a hazard.
Because the air is dry in the freezer the air will absorb moisture (ice is just water). If you want to hurry up the process. Wipe the ice with a dry rag. The soft fluffy stuff will come off. Then with a damp cloth. Then get a hair dryer and heat the ice as you wipe it off the door.
The heater warms up the cooling coils to melt ice that forms on them. That’s where the most ice will build up. The rest of the freezer is defrosted from air circulation in the freezer that sublimates any ice buildup.
