I love root beer floats, but I also love Dr. Pepper floats.
Coke or Pepsi? Meh.

We had to use vanilla ice cream and grape juice. No sodas in the house unless it was New Year’s Eve or somebody’s birthday.
It’s called a ROOT BEER float for a reason.
Root Beer is the definitive answer here, but on a rare ocassion Orange Crush makes a nice Dreamsicle Float.
I love coke floats with vanilla ice cream. Yum! Root beer, on the other hand, I can leave or take. I don’t dislike it, but it’s not my favorite drink nor my favorite mix for a float. My second favorite float would be a cherry coke with vanilla ice cream float.
That applies specifically to a root beer float, obviously. This thread, from the OP even, is discussing not just the classic root beer float alone, but also other options and combinations that other people have discovered and enjoyed.

Root Beer Float is my vote. I am a big fan of the Float and Root Beer in general. Coke doesn’t come close to it, I would choose Cream Soda before Coke and even an Orange Soda with vanilla Ice Cream is better to me.
Finally had one with cream soda last night. Not bad at all. The cream soda in question, however, was Crush brand, which for some reason is bubble-gum pink. Not at all like the amber cream soda I remember from my childhood.
My first cream soda experiences were the pink stuff, as a kid in Pennsylvania. I’m wanting to try the orange ‘dreamsicle’ float people keep mentioning, if I can find an orange soda without artificial sweeteners in it. What is it with Brits, that they have to add artificial sweeteners to things that ALREADY HAVE SUGAR IN THEM? One or the other, please, not both! -mutter grumble gripe-
I’m able to buy both Fanta and Mirinda brand orange soda (I prefer the latter, actually) in Russia. I’m sure they’re full of artificial ingredients, but I don’t think sweetener is one of them. Don’t know why the UK would be different.
Crush is, of course, is my go-to brand of orange soda in Canada. I had a Dreamsicle float last night, and it was lovely! :o
