Minneapolis’ Fox 9 is reporting that a man who wasn’t involved in the protests was driving home with six kids in his vehicle. Law enforcement threw a flash bag at his car, sending all six kids to the hospital, including a six month old.
I wish I had influence. I would try to sell to those protesting in Minneapolis the idea of how immensely AWESOME it would be if they all just…disappeared at sunset.
Imagine Donald’s thousands of masked thugs standing around, baffled. Who to pepper-spray? Who to gas? Who to shoot???
(I fear greatly that someone is going to give Donald his excuse to go the Insurrection Act/martial law route. If only they would NOT do that.)

Well, that IS cinematic. But I was thinking more of the unmasked people out after dark. Too many of them are excited about making headlines (and behaving accordingly).

Whoever happens by. It’s a large city, there are constantly people moving around it who have to get across town to go to/from work etc.
And after dark everyone looks dark-skinned.
I’ve thought the same thing, the problem is, without the protesters, there’s nothing to stop them from going door to door or pulling people out of cars.
It’s nothing do with excuses. They already have excuse enough if they wanted to do it. They’re waiting for a time when they can get the most mileage out of the Insurrection Act.
I maintain that the endgame is reverse secession. As we get closer to the election you’ll hear more leaders talking about how this or that blue state is “basically in rebellion.” At the opportune time, they’ll have ICE provoke an outrage that they’ll construe as a revolt, and take steps both to interfere with the election and suspend that state’s legislative representation.
I know some will find that theory to be “out there” but to me it seems so obvious as to be mundane. The racist states lost their power in the Civil War, and they’re aiming for a quasi-bureaucratic do-over. Red states will never rest until they’ve entirely reversed the Civil Rights Act, Reconstruction, and the Civil War itself.
Pay no attention to one of the many ICE uniforms; jeans and local sportsball cap (tactical vest optional and easy to ditch).
I dare them to try. It’s not a war they can win.
What I’m suggesting isn’t armed conflict; it’s simply creating a spectacle to rationalize denial of representation. Republicans refused to seat Adelita Grijalva for 36 days without even having a stated reason for it. If Trump surrounds the Capitol with armed goons and refuses to let certain Democrats enter the chamber, and Fox broadcasts reasons why he can do this to states that are “in rebellion”, you know SCOTUS will go along with it too. What’s anyone else going to do about it?
It would be grand to think there would be a general strike or whatever. But if there’s any one thing that explains the success of Trump’s pressure tactics, it’s that although some people will risk a 0.1% chance of being arrested or killed while yelling at ICE, very few workers will do anything at all to risk their livelihoods. White-collar workers roll over like trained poodles, and they’re the most secure among us.
I don’t want to be a doomer, but likewise I don’t find bluster to be particularly helpful either.
I think that suggesting that people are going to shrug when they can’t vote is insane. That would only happen in Stephen Miller’s sick Nazi fantasy. It’s not bluster to say that, and it’s idiotic doomerism to believe it.
Might they get away with putting their thumb on the scale? I don’t doubt it. But to suggest they’ll say the vote is off, and everyone in state government and all voters go, “Oh well, dem’s da breaks.” That’s stupid.
What are they doing right now in Minneapolis? They’re not shrugging their shoulders and saying “Welp, I guess this is a dictatorship now”. They’re organizing and fighting back and they’re making the thugs retreat. And these are polite, nonconfrontational midwesterners. You think that’s gonna fly in New York?
If we get through this nightmare with our democracy in tact. ice needs to be abolished completely. If there ever was a reason for them to exist, (which I’m skeptical about) the whole concept is forever poisoned.
I think you’re right. At least some of their duties are needed, but that organization has no future. There are already calls to abolish it by Democrats.
Either a new organization will be needed or give those duties to another agency. Or at minimum, rebrand it.
