A lot of the atrocities were committed by veteran ICE officers who went through better training. It’s more of a cultural problem. Trump sets the tone all the way down - we want you to be brutal, we want you to be our masked goons, we want you to be our SA. Training might help here and there, but they won’t fix the fundamental culture.
That said, stripping out how to be responsible agents of the government IS part of the way they’re shaping the culture of DHS, but restoring good training is treating a symptom, not the disease.
That’s true. And I do think that cutting out that training was part of the signal to even the veterans that they don’t have to worry about that shit anymore, because they are now anonymous secret police and the administration will cover for anything they do.

Video of the March 2025 fatal shooting of American citizen Ruben Ray Martinez obtained by CBS News appears to contradict claims by federal officials that Martinez was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent because he “accelerated” and “intentionally ran over” another agent with his car.
The killing of Martinez, who was 23 at the time, in South Padre Island, Texas, on March 15, 2025, was reported by local news outlets at the time. But it was not until February of this year, nearly 11 months later, that ICE confirmed one of its agents had fatally shot Martinez.
Re-entering the US last night at DFW, I mistakenly crossed the “yellow line” on the floor at passport control by a few inches. As I backed up, the officer (smiling and jokingly) motioned toward his sidearm. I said “Dude, that’s not funny at all!” He recovered quickly, and still smiling, pulled out his handcuffs, before waving me through.
These people are dangerous fucks. Not that it would have mattered, but I’m really sorry I didn’t get his name.
To be fair, that sounds like the type of joke they’d probably already heard a dozen times already that day. Like when a cashier holds that hundred dollar bill up to the light to check and the customer says “it should be good, I just made it this morning hurr durr”.
And may we remember, the Border guys have displayed the whole “license to be assholes to the citizen” schtick since way before Homeland Sec existed. But at least, small consolation, once it used to only be encountered at the actual crossing and not involve immediate fear of lethal force.
Much like most of the posters on this board, I wanted DHS to continue to be underfunded and there to be a partial government shutdown due to No deal being reached due to the Democrats holding out continually.
But Donald Trump is now saying, if it doesn’t end by monday, he simply going to replace the TSA agents with ICE agents.
Which come I don’t see is being a good thing either, so I really don’t know what should happen at this point.
I mean if I were a leader of the democrats, and it’s a good thing I’m not, I would probably say something like “okay, fine. DHS will never ever reopen again then, it can stay shut down for the rest of time. No deal ever.”
