The plan is to open as many of these centers as possible, let the people close a few to satisfy their need to “win”, and get away with the centers that open anyway.
We knew one of those mothers that were shown. She owned the jewelry shop in our small suburb north of Chicago. Everyone in town knew her or knew of her. My sister still has the pearls she bought from her.
It’s an extra scoop of irony that the buildings that DHS is purchasing for detention centers are abandoned warehouses. You know, those symbols of the post-industrial crumbling of the US manufacturing sector that the Trump administration was allegedly gonna bring roaring back in triumph?
There could not be a more pathetic confession that MAGA have no fucking clue how to strengthen the US economy by supporting enterprises that are actually productive. All they can do is try to keep giving the economy repeated hits of crack by cannibalizing the material remains of formerly productive enterprises for their taxpayer-funded massive expansion of the jackbooted-thuggery industry.
Extra, extra scoop of irony (I guess) it was just a couple of Democratic administrations ago that rightwing CTers were warning about the evil government buying abandoned warehouses, and abandoned Walmarts, to use as detention centers for the right. Now that this is actually happening, for other purposes, the right (AFAICT) is . . . absolutely silent.
This is why right-wing extremists are so paranoid and terrified: they assume that their opponents, and/or their victims, must naturally be motivated by the same vicious lust to abuse others that they themselves feel.
If I were that much of an asshole, and just took it for granted that most humans are naturally as much of an asshole as me, then I’d be very scared of my political opponents too.

As I and many others have often said, this is the natural behavior of those who entirely lack empathy. When one is unable to model another’s mind, one projects the workings of one’s own on everyone else. Hence, the “every accusation a confession” bon mot. It’s become a cliché, but it really does reveal something important and fundamental about their psychology.
They’re silent because they feel safe, rather like the (nominal) Christians who anticipate sitting on a cloud in Heaven enjoying the shrieks of the damned in Hell. But their “safety” is merely a byproduct of their being far down the target list; once the powers that be run out of the higher-ranking undesirables … they may not be so silent anymore.
She was the mother of the man, who also had a Midwestern accent. I don’t remember his own occupation being mentioned, but he was a retired physician who had lived in the Chicago area since he was 13.
I didn’t used to be, but I’m warming to the idea.

Another murder by ICE.
This one a while ago, but it was initially just reported as “shot by law enforcement”. The report claims the driver was ramming the agent who killed him. There’s no video. The family say that that story doesn’t agree with either what they were initially told nor with eye witness accounts.
There’s longer versions of this, but I believe this is the one I watched last night (I’m at work and don’t want to play it with the audio right now).
