Iceland a U.S. State?

I read somewhere (CH.com ) that Iceland was a U.S. state for 3 weeks in 1979? Is this true? I know the U.S. provides military services to Iceland. Any help please?

You read it on a humor site. That should be your first clue.

No, it isn’t true.

No, it was only a state for 20 minutes. In 1960.

Seriously, where this may have originated is that it was a U.S. protectorate for a short period after Hitler invaded Denmark in 1940 until it established its own independence.

BTW–a poor choice of User Names.

People could jump to the wrong conclusion about you.

If you want to change it, e-mail an Admin & ask. Don’t just start a new account, cause that’s sock puppeting, & against both Board Rules, & Board Netequette.

We do however, provide their military defense. At taxpayer expense.

How timely, as it was just announced last week or so that we’re pulling out of the Icelandic Defense Force by September.

Or, for all we know, the *right *conclusion.

Sock puppeting?

I think Busta meant “Puppeteering.”

But what does it refer to?

Having multiple accounts.

One for the “straight man” role and then the sock puppet account who comes in and backs up the straight man. Sort of a shill account. It’s like having two or more bodies that you can posess and be different people throughout the day.

How devious… why didn’t I think of that!

You didn’t think of it, because it can get you banned faster than anything else I’ve seen on the SDMB.

Well, it can, but I’ll wager the fact that dolphinboy didn’t think of it is because he’s not a pathetic loser.

My six alternate accounts find that offensive.

But I find it funny.

For a few years after World War II, much of the hinterland of western Sicily was ruled by the bandit chieftain Turiddu Giuliano. He thought Sicily should not be ruled by Italy and waged a political war against the Italian government for Sicilian independence. Then he had a better idea: He requested the USA to admit Sicily as the 49th state.

So, **Inigo **. . . your “straight man” has never posted, right?

Inconceivable!

:stuck_out_tongue:

Could you expand upon this? Icelandic taxpayers or American?

I do not think it means what you think it means.
