Iconic foods for different areas

50/50 draft lager and tomato juice. I first encountered it 50 years ago playing poker with farmers in west Kansas.

That does not sound good. But I’ve never tried it, so who knows.

It’s just a michelada without the spices. Sounds gross, but under the right circumstances they can be quite tasty.

Let’s complete Cincinnati. Goetta is distinguished from it’s lesser ilk like Scrapple due to the inclusion of steel cut oats in the sausage blend, along with distinctive seasonings. Gliers is the ubiquitous brand and likely the best. Great with breakfast, but they put that stuff on everything around here, especially pizza. It’s good, I dig it.

Cincinnati chili. Love it or hate it, it’s a thing here with chili parlors everywhere. Gold Star, Camp Washington Chili, Price Hill Chili, Empress Chili, Dixie Chili…they are legion. Served typically as a “way” (as in, 3-way, 4-way, etc), it’s runny chili (often seasoned with ingredients like cinnamon, or chocolate, or nutmeg) that’s served over spaghetti. A 3-way is chili, spaghetti and finely shredded mild cheddar cheese. 4-way adds onions, 5-way adds beans. It’s also served with mustard and onions on coney dogs, which are the food of the Gods.

Graeter’s Ice Cream: Possibly the best ice cream on Earth, particularly their black raspberry chip, which is dry-ice shipped across the globe. Made in small batches with the french pot method, it’s expensive, but oh so good. So good. Oprah’s favorite, so you just KNOW it’s good, right?

Brats/Metts: Bratwursts and Mettwursts are HUGE here, which no surprise given the German population in this town.

Montgomery Inn ribs/BBQ sauce. Bob Hope used to get this stuff shipped out to his CA home. Not my cup of tea but so many celebs/athletes, etc that are in town swear by it.

Grippo’s BBQ Chips/Cheese Nibs. OMG. Best BBQ chips ever. People actually shake the bags of the chips in a “measuring the weight” sort of way, the idea being that the heavier they are, the more seasoning and hence spicier/yummier. They are damn good but I think their cheese puffs are even better.

Tangential, but important: Christian Moerlein Brewery. Very old brewery, opened in 1853 in Cicinnati. Was a very early pioneer of the craft beer movement back in the 1980’s.

Yeah, fair enough. “Charcoal grilled roast beef” works for me. Nothing particularly special about it, but it’s a fairly impressive feat to charcoal grill a big chunk of meat like that and get the consistent results that they do.

And Jake’s is the right answer.

it may(?) (no definitive evidence) have been a SW thing, esp with Latino population

and don’t forget

Imos pizza
