ID a ST:TNG episode, or at least confirm it exists?

This arose from a current thread in GQ regarding the tradition of yelling for ‘Freebird’ to be played at concerts. (I’m sorry, I don’t know how to do that thread linking thing)

I said:

According to ST:TNG, the tradition lives on to the 23rd (or whatever it is) century: Riker is in the holodeck playing trombone, he calls for requests, and Deanna hits him with that, much to his dismay.

TGWATY asked:
-=-
Is this from an actual episode, or some other peripheral source?
-=-

And all I could reply was:

Actual episode, but I’m not enough of a fan of the series to tell you the title or even which season. I’m sure it wasn’t season one (Will has a beard in my mental picture) nor season two – Dr. Crusher is there in the holodeck, too, and questions Deanna as to what’s going on and Deanna says something about Will never being able to make it all the way through. Meanwhile Riker has grimaced and gotten ready to start the request when a Red Alert or something goes off, saving him.

I think all of this was basically the bit that gets shown before all the credits and such and the episode really starts.

So – Does anyone know which episode this was in? Or can you confirm you saw it too?

Ooops. Nevermind: Otto has already IDed the episode, and corrected my many memories of error in regard to events.

Thanks to Otto and sorry to have wasted bandwidth here.

Sheesh. That should be, ‘my many errors of memory.’

<sigh>

Definitely I need to up my medications.

I remember the incident, but the song that Troi asks for is not “Free Bird.” If I remember correctly, it’s called “Night Bird,” which is presumably supposed to be something very difficult to play (if the writers had been hip, it would have been “Giant Steps”). Riker is saved by the bell when he is summoned just as he’s putting the horn to his lips. Sorry, I don’t know the title of the episode.

I believe it was Second Chances.

I wanna know how you’re supposed to play Freebird on a trombone.

It’s a trombone from the FUTURE!!!

Same way those Skynyrd boys play guitar: with a slide.

FREE BORG!!!

That’s clever.

Ow, don’t do it again.
