I used to be a member of a Beatles bootleg website. For a small fee ($5), the webmaster would send you the entire contents of the site (at that time) with links intact. In other words, pop in the CD and it’s just like being on the site without having to connect to the actual site (which tended to be slow at times).
Is such a thing possible for the SDMB? Perhaps a “Threads of 2001” disc containing all of the threads in all forums. It would certainly make searching a heckuva lot easier.
I can’t get search to work, but there was a long thread in here recently which covered the whys and wherefores and what the Reader would or would not do.
The basic answer was, IIRC, “not going to happen in the near future, if at all”.
Yeah but can you imagine HOW DAMN FRUSTRATING it would be reading archived threads, and burning to reply, and not being able to, because you’re reading off a CD in the middle of nowhere with the nearest internet connection eight days travel away…?
It might be an option to consider when the occasional board purge comes around. I know that had it been available before the last major purge, I would have been happy to pay for an enduring copy of Satan’s “You want to put WHAT, WHERE?” thread.
Some software programs let you download a whole website & save to your HD. You can then put them on cd if you want. But Not me cause im only doing 56k.
