Maybe elitism is the wrong word. Maybe not. But let me throw it back to you another way. If it’s meaningless, then why are there any objections to losing a title? The title has no reason except to announce what you’ve done, it provides no functional advantages of any kind. It’s purely a marker. So if you don’t think it elevates status, why would anyone care if it stays or goes?

Some Charter Members here think their Charter Member status symbolizes proof of their fidelity, loyalty, and faith in the Straight Dope Message Board, and a willingness to put their money where their mouth is.

Actually, that’s quite a bit better. Short of the discounted subscription rate, I don’t care a bit about the charter member tag and I don’t see why anyone else does. You could put cheap bastard under my name and I wouldn’t care as long as I kept the rate.
