Id these WWII Commanders from vague description of names

I was watching a documentary about the WWII Blitzkrieg. One part of the documentary mentioned a British commander named something that sounded like “Lord Galt,” and a French commander that sounded something like “Maurice Garand.” There were no onscreen graphics identifying them, so I’ve tried to spell them as they apparently sounded.

Any ideas???
