ID this Anglo-Irish writer and TV presenter

A few years ago I read a very funny book by a guy who was half-Brit half-Mick. Here’s what I remember about him:

a) The book was an account of his travels through Ireland. On the trip he visited a lot of pubs and also Chinese restaurants where he’d always order Singapore noodles.

b) During the trip he participated in a pilgrimage to a shrine.

c) He was raised and educated in the UK but spent his summers on a farm in Eire owned by his mother’s brother.

d) The book jacket mentioned that he had presented TV shows in the UK.

e) The book was published maybe 15 - 20 years ago.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I’d like to read the book again and read any others he’s written.

MCCARTHY’S BAR, by Pete McCarthy.

My goodness, TOWP, that’s right! And in record time. Wow!

Sorry, TOWP, I was so impressed with your speed and knowledge that I forgot my manners. Thank you!

Oh no … I just googled Pete McCarthy and he’s dead. :frowning:
