ID this backyard grranimal?

GIF from motion activated camera. My friend is wondering if they are a threat to her dog.

The GIF is 1080p, so you can size it full screen for a better view.

Ferrets? Grey foxes?

Link does not work for me. Just a blank screen

Huh. It should take you straight to an imgur page with a gif. You get literally an empty white web page?

Works for me. Looks like grey foxes.

Here’s stills from the GIF

Grey box. I just got it to work by switching to Safari browser instead of Firefox on my Mac.

Second gray fox sighting on these forums this week.

Here’s the other sighting

What kind of dogs does she have? Foxes are relatively small, with my own dogs I’d worry more about them killing the foxes. Which could still hurt the dog, mind you - even if the dog wins, they could get a nasty bite or catch a disease.

It’s a chihuahua / pug / pomeranian mix. Friend calls it “Chugranian”. Pretty beefy and assertive for a small dog IMO. Not sure who would win that fight.

Ah, my dogs are much bigger. Foxes are shy and unlikely to target the dog, but if he corners the fox it will fight back, and in that weight class I’d give good odds to the fox.

Some good basic info:

That would be my worry - he’s pretty aggressive even with larger dogs near him - get off my lawn! - style. He’d go nuts if a fox was nearby.

Also worrying that there were two of them. If they do pack behavior, it’s all over for my friend’s dog. Googling says foxes don’t pack – maybe this was a mated pair?

If there are two grranimals in your yard, it appears that they match.

(I’ll see myself out.)

From looking closely at the second still in post #5, I’d agree with fox, but my first thought from seeing the gif was mongoose.

I know, right? Looong lean body and creeping walk looks very mustelid to me. Except the legs are too long.

Do you have a banjo?

This time of year, more likely to be mother and kit with Junior getting ready to strike off on his own. So cute!
