ID this book series?

Not that I have any great desire to reread the series, but I have curiousity, and dammit, it shall be slaked!

When I was a kid (early 70s), I read a series of books about the fun and adventures of a submarine during wartime. One book was called The Tattooed Man, I think. It was about a new boat captain named Jarvis. 90% of the books were little more than “The bulkheads began to creak and buckle as depthcharges exploded all around.” The other 10% was about the cook offering to make egg sandwiches for the sailors.

This ring a bell with anyone?

Are you sure it was a submarine? A Google on “The Tattooed Man” brings up books by Howard Pease, which DO have a maritime theme but on tramp steamers and such rather than subs. The hero was a young man named Todd Moran.
