I was up at the Shipwreck museum just off Whitefish point in the U.P. when I got to see this freighter heading out. THis was on Friday Sept 7th about 3pm Eastern time. It looked to be heading into Superior. THe picture, while stunning to me, is not high enough resolution to make out the name of the boat.
Can anyone help me with this? Can you tell me based on the shape of the boat and the blurry two word name on the back which freighter this one was?
The Paul R. Tregurtha perhaps?
MV Paul R. Tregurtha is a Great Lakes-based bulk carrier freighter. She is the current Queen of the Lakes, an unofficial but widely recognized title given to the longest vessel active on the Great Lakes. Launched as MV William J. My money’s on the St. Clair . More pictures here .
It looks like the only boat in that area at that time that fits the picture.
Boatnerd is a good place to look for this kind of info. Not especially easy to use, but if you dig around there’s some good tools.

THanks for that link
I see the Indiana Harbor went through the Soo locks at 9:55am going up. That sure looks like it to me.
Not sure about the St. Clair. THough it looks almost exactly like the Indiana Harbor; the blurry two word name looks more like ‘Indiana Harbor’
Also the two smokestacks don’t seem to line up exactly.
here’s the Indiana Harbor

I second that. The bridge of the Indiana Harbor is wider and hangs out in the air like the one in your pic, the St Clair’s doesn’t.
