ID this movie

Okay. This is driving me crazy. I’ve been trying to remember the name of a WWII movie.

It’s set in a castle in the Black Forest. Several POW’s are trying to escape, and are building and hiding a glider inside the castle. They fly kites to judge the air currents. One of the POW’s is blind, and another is a scientist who is hiding his identity from the Nazis.

I’m sorry, I can’t think of any of the actors’ names; I watched about half of it at two in the morning. It was so good I’ve wanted to see it again, but I don’t know what it’s called! AAARGH!

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds a little like the incredibly strange movie Castle Keep, but that didn’t have POW’s in it.

No, they’re definitely prisoners. That sounds interesting, though.

On second thought, it’s probably The Birdmen.

HA! Thanks, Larry, you rock.

No prob. And there really was a Colditz Castle and a glider, though most of the movie is made up, IIRC.

Damn it – I knew this one instantly. Why? Because, gentlemen, this was – and I don’t say this lightly – one of the best Doug McClure made-for-television movies ever!

Wow, mighty strong words, Baldwin.

The PBS show, Nova, did a documentary on Colditz, including the construction of a replica of the famous glider.

Wow. Better than SST: Death Flight or Satan’s Triangle?
