The container must have a width of at least 9.5 inches, and a length of at least 27 inches. It must have a depth sufficient to house a car battery. It doesn’t have to be waterproof in the sense that it could actually be submerged in the water without leaking, but it must be waterproof enough to protect electrical components in the rain. I have found a toolbox that seems to meet this criteria (http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-028001L-28-Inch-Structural-Toolbox/dp/B000KN470Q), but I am wondering if there is something cheaper than the 40$ but shipping that the toolbox costs. I am open to any suggestions – the container does not have to be designed for the purpose that I intend to use it (housing battery, fuse box, wiring, etc.). Thanks in advance…
Use a cooler. A small one with your dimensions run $15-$20.
Maybe something from Rubbermaid?
If you have a Orchard Supply, Lowe’s, Home Depot or similar, you can probably find something there.
I don’t know if it is still true of the “no maintenance” batteries, but I was always warned not to leave a car battery in a sealed container as it may produce hydrogen gas. If it is still true, make sure that even though the container is ‘sealed’, it is still ventilated.
I had a teenage friend who was working on a car and had a battery explode near his face. Some of the acid got in his face but he was lucky enough to have water handy to flush his face. He was unharmed and we all learned a valuable lesson…let him work around the battery.
Go down to REI and look for “dry bags” in the kayaking section. These are bags, of varying size, used to transport stuff while kayaking. Though not rigid, they are very waterproof (provided you seal them correctly) and they would definitely have sizes to accomodate the dimensions you mention.
Where do you intend to plant your bomb?
I thought about that too, but I wonder: Won’t something that heavy, with sharp corners, be a recipe for tearing the drybag if it’s not carried very, very carefully?
You can also get dry boxes from the likes of Pelican and Otterbox. Depending on the dimensions of your battery, it may or may not fit in the box and it may or may not be cheaper than the one you already saw…
Do a google search for boat battery boxes, there are all kinds of options.
