This Youtube video contains a clip from the old Canadian film Winter Kept Us Warm, in which one of the characters is playing a guitar and singing. His first song is a crude schoolboy thing in English, but the second one is in a language I don’t recognize.
This second song begins at the 51 second mark, and afterward the singer describes its meaning as “far away is my love”. But in what language is he singing?
The only clue I have is this study guide to the film, which hints that the second boy in the scene (‘Peter’, not the singer) is of Finnish ancestry, and that references to this appear in the film. Combined with Peter’s comment “Hey, that’s from my record”, we have a suggestion the song might be in Finnish. But nothing conclusive.
So which language is this?
