I’ve been inspired by last night’s conversation with my neighbor over a bottle of wine and the rash of “ID this XXXX” threads in Cafe Society. Can the Millions help me track down a band from the late '90s?
Mr. Snicks (then Boyfriend Snicks) and I went to a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI, sometime in the late '90s. Could’ve been anywhere from 1996 to 2000, but I’m thinking it was in '97 or '98 or so. Definitely after **Swingers **(1996) and after they got big following the release of their self-titled album, but before their SuperBowl performance (early 1999). Now that I think about it, it must have been in 1998, because the band’s managers or handlers invited us (among other people) to meet them after the performance, and I remember Scotty, the lead singer, telling us that they’d been booked for the SuperBowl performance when we asked him what was next for them.
However, this question isn’t about BBVD. Instead, it’s about the band that opened for them. They were fantastic, and I’ve always regretted not buying their CD. They were a funky, alternative-type band that combined a number of different instruments and vocalists, rather like Rusted Root. They had a female vocalist that was outstanding. I recall them stating that they were from St. Louis. I particularly remember this lyric in one of their rappier, more upbeat poppy songs: “Got lint in my pocket…Say what, say what?” (It was sort of a call-and-answer chorus, with the bandmembers replying with the “say what say what?”)
Obviously, it’s 12 years too late, but I was hoping that a) someone could identify this band and b) I might be able to get my hands on some of their recordings. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
You have beaten Google. There are only 4 results for: lyrics “Got lint in my pocket” and none of them help. Removing the quote marks results in a vast array of links and lyrics.

This is one of my proudest Google hunts to date. Felt since because I am from St. Louis I needed to find your answer.
Good job – I tried looking this up as well (I too am from the area and there was some pride involved) but finally had to give up.
And I’m from St. Louis (a long time ago)! Urgh. For the lack of an s…
I know, hey? And trying to search for “Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Milwaukee 1998” or combinations thereof didn’t work either. (I figured that if I could just find the date of the concert, maybe then I could find out who else played that night too. No dice.)
I tried the lyrics and St. Louis and all that, and was definitely stymied.
myskepticsight, outstanding! That’s definitely them - I recognize the female vocalist and the “lint in my pocket” lead singer guy. Sweet! Way to represent the hometown!
I seriously love this place. I thought I had no chance, then I thought, hell, take it to the Millions. Someone might know.
Oh! And further research shows that they also are known as LP Outsiders. Maybe to distance themselves from the book or the other band popular in the '60s, I don’t know. Or maybe because they were forced to by record companies.
Anyway, they’ve released four albums, of which the earliest two seem to be impossible to find. But the fourth one is still pretty widely available, and the third also has some copies out there - I just picked up a used version of this one; the title’s All Purpose Crackers.
They broke up in 2003ish - some websites cite them being tired of record company runarounds, some just say they just went separate ways. Information’s surprisingly difficult to find about them, but it’s pretty cool that something still exists after 12 years.
Cool.
