This thread reminded me of a short story I read in 9th grade which practically traumatized me, but I can’t think of the name. It was about a young boy that pulled his crippled little brother around in a wagon. At the end the little brother dies, and his neck resembles that of some type of bird (a crane, maybe). The name of the bird was part of the story’s title.
I can’t remember the name but I remember the story. I thought at first it sounded like one called SHERREL, but I looked it up and nope (though it does involve a kid brother who dies).
The Scarlet Ibis?
By James Hurst. I read it once when I was a kid. I’m not ready to read it again yet. shudder
Yep that’s it, thanks. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have something in both my eyes.
I have an old copy, printed out on a dot-matrix printer. It’s sitting on my desk right now. Rips my heart out every freaking time!
