Idi Amin Deathwatch and Condolence Thread

You cant believe how much damage he caused to Uganda’s reputation. Even now decades after his overthrow, people still know Uganda because of him even though it is now one of Africa’s few success stories.
He was a funny guy though…you guys probably know about the ‘Mr queen of England speech’ right? One of the funniest speeches ever.

cowgirl, I read somewhere (no idea where) that men in Africa are willing to pay more for a prositute who won’t use a condom. I have NO idea if that’s true, but even if it is, there’s no reason to take a defeatist attitude about Africa. We can and should help – and Idi Amin can rot in hell.

Geez, I wish we had this much support on this board for stopping Saddam. Both Evil men. Idi probably more so.

That was tongue in cheek by the way.

When I was in 5th grade, in 1967, my social studies book devoted a chapter to a country from each continent. Africa’s country was Uganda. My thoughts were something like this “What an idyllic country. What wonderful scenery, and lovely people. I’d love to go visit there someday.” I was entranced, and I followed in the news whenever I saw the name. Then Idi Amin came along and shattered my illusion. He is the man who made me realize that even Eden on Earth has serpents. Bastard.

I agree, the old Chinese Death of a 1,000 Cuts would be a good place to start. Let’s make the first 500 of them paper cuts.

Another would be the Amerind habit of letting their squaws slowly scrape off all your skin with sharp edged sea shells.

Amin was a lightweight compared to the Hutu slaughter of the Tutsis in Rwanda in the mid-90s. It’s estimated that 800,000 to 1 million people were systematically murdered. We, of course, did nothing (no oil, no mineral wealth, no WMD).

I lived in Uganda for a year in 1997-1998. The people there are still in shock over what Amin did to them. Long after his departure, bodies were found in cisterns, attics, cellars, etc. I was told that Maribou Storks were rarely seen in Uganda prior to Amin’s rule. These are carrion eaters; huge (tall as a man) birds with long beaks, that stand around like grisly undertakers. They now hang out at the stockyards waiting for the errant gobbet of flesh.

Early in his regime, Amin was accosted by a disabled man near the government building who asked when Amin was going to do something for people like him. Amin assured him that he would take care of the problem. He issued a general invitation to all disabled people to meet at the shore of Lake Victoria, where they would recieve what was due them. At the lake, they were herded onto barges, taken out some distance, and dumped overboard, where most drowned.

I worked closely with Ugandans, a generally gentle folk. They have a haunted look to them, though. I think that this period has been permanently burned into the national psyche.

Amin was a monster. I cannot fathom why Saudi Arabia granted him assylum, nor why little protest was raised. Don’t want to piss off the oil producers, is my guess. The Saudis seem to harbor and produce all manner of despicable characters, the latest of which was the architect of 9/11. When asked about these things, the spokesman puts on a hurt expression and denies any ill intent by the Saudi government. Bullshit, I say.

Nice choice Zenster.

I would suggest intentionally infecting him with the flesh eating virus then throwing him down a dry well to literally rot to death while the insects swarm over his rotting flesh.

And that’s still too good a death for him.

Amin had one towering accomplishment - he managed to make Obote, the guy who overthrew him, look like a good guy in comparison.
Considering Obote’s track record, that takes some doing.

This post reminds me of certain kids in junior high school who used to go around giving you a good, sharp jab in the arm and then when you turned on them they’d say they were “Just joking” or “Just fooling around.”

I never believed them and I don’t believe whuckfistle.

Yeah, you’d think if Bush had any interest in going after the people who were responsible for 9/11, Saudi Arabia would be the place to invade, not Iraq, which was why I was always suspicious of the Iraqi invasion.

I hope that in hell the demons graft Idi Amin’s head onto Strom Thurmond’s body.

Racism? I didn’t see any mention of race anywhere in Monkey’s post. Although Monkey’s post may seem harsh, there are some valid points made in it.

Just want to point out that there men in the U.S. who are willing to pay more for a prositute to not use a condom.

I did not know that, nor did I want to…shriek!

I for one am shocked at the outpouring of vitriol aimed at an ailing elder statesman of Africa.

And, if there’s any justice in this world, vice versa.

Is this verified as true? I just ask because it is identical in all but the location and place of execution to legends of Vlad Tepes (aka, the “Impaler”, aka “Dracula”)

Thanks

You are being sarcastic, right? If not, do you not know how evil he was?

Damnit…, he`s on to me.

I just think it’s in bad taste to celebrate the death of someone, especially if he isn’t even dead yet.

And yes, I’m being sarcastic. Search for the train wreck of a Strom Thurmond thread from a couple weeks back. I’m planning on doing it shortly to see if any of the scolds who clucked their tongues at those who were OK with Thurmond’s death are in here posting about their personal choice of method for torturing Amin to death.

And no, I am not tating that Amin and Thurmond are morally equivalent, so everyone gearing up to go there can just gear right back down again.

On a more serious note, did I miss the exception in the “wishing death on someone” rule where it’s OK to wish death on Idi Amin?
