Well, far be it from me to deny a community its specialized nomenclature. But the description “fighting game” is so apparently general — and so unrelated to the specific properties that, in your view, qualify something thereof — that taking umbrage when someone does not share your definition is perhaps misguided.
FWIW, at one point I did play such games rather often, although not since the earlier Street Fighter II days. “Fighting game” means to me much what it means to you (although frankly the exact requirements of a life bar and the loser’s death still seem ad hoc). Nevertheless it’s very difficult for me not to conclude that you’re taking this issue a bit seriously.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl is way more fun when you add your own custom characters and stages in anyway. Are there any tournaments where custom characters ever get played? That would be FUN.
And like I said before, I’ll say it again. SMASH BROTHERS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED AS A COMPETETIVE FIGHTER. It is a party brawler, like power stone was. If you choose to take it seriously, be prepared for tons of silly rules and regulations that have to be put in place to make it more “fair.” People are going to disagree with what “fair” is, and you’ll have to live with it.

This is basically a variant of “no true Scotsman”. It is clearly a fighting game, so you’ve gone with “well it isn’t a true fighting games” because it doesn’t fulfill a set a criteria that the genus “fighting game” doesn’t depend on.
