The Brawl Thread

Less than one day now to the release of everyone’s favorite fighting game* Super Smash Brothers Brawl* (yes it’s everyone’s favorite before it gets released; that’s how the video game industry works now with people being “fans” of titles long before they’re actually out). If my local store is selling it starting at midnight tomorrow like they should be I plan on picking up a copy tomorrow night. So who’s up for some Brawling?

I’ve been playing the Japanese version for a little over a month now, and holy fucking shit is it good. I hated Melee (though loved the original), so I’m pleasantly surprised to be digging this game so much. Easily the best multiplayer game released in years – Halo 3 has nothing on this.

And King Dedede is freakin’ awesome!

I’ve been looking at a ton of videos and spoilers for months, including the ones on the official site. This looks like it could be one of the most fun games not just for the Wii, but of all time.

Luigi is insane. By which I mean not “Luigi is an insane fighter,” but “Luigi is mentally unstable.” He has a creepy-sounding “Let’s-a go…” when he starts a match, and his Final Smash is bizarre. I think that Luigi has channeled his jealousy at being Number Two into insanity and power. (Somebody over at Something Awful made a hilarious “advertisement” reading something like, “Do you or your loved ones suffer from one or more of the following more than twice a week? Drastically reduced attack power, Greater launch distance when hit, Increased likelihood of slipping, Steady increase in damage percentage, Flower growth on head, Dizziness, Uncontrollable taunting, Sudden sleepiness, Decreased movement speed? If so, you may suffer from NEGATIVE ZONE. Don’t let green-clad plumbers let you down. Ask your doctor about this new pill today.”)

I leave you with The Falcon Punch Song.

I preordered from Amazon so it won’t show up on my door step until Wednesday at the earliest. It’s taking every ounce of willpower I have not to drive to Target right now and plunk down $50 again for a game I’m already getting in three days.

/me smashes a bar stool over Just Some Guy’s head.

We’re heading over to Best Buy in a bit to (hopefully) pick up a copy. I’m not a big fan of the series–I’m not a big fighting fan anyways–but my husband loves SSB, so I’m getting stuck with it.

Just picked up my copy at the local Toys R Us… I think I’m gonna make some breakfast/brunch before I put it in though, because who knows when I’ll take it out?

/me sneaks up behindMalacandra and smashes a mug of root beer over his head.

laughs So, not only did we pick up Brawl and a few other things, we got out of the store before many of the people with pre-orders. Epic win

Seems like it was also system stock day, because a few people were there for Wiis also. As one person put it, “We’re here for different reasons, but we’re all going to the same aisle.” I also picked up Zack and Wiki (which I’ll play after Owls gets off the TV) and a couple DVDs–Blood+ is finally out! swoon

Damn, my Wii is at my son’s mom’s house. I let him take it with him the last time he was here. This was supposed to be my weekend with him but plans changed and now I wont have my Wii until next weekend. Now I’m debating if I should buy it now and stare at the box or wait until next weekend when I get the Wii and run the chance of it being sold out.

I’m curious, how is Melee so different that you hated it and loved the others?

I picked it up and am going to play it soon. What controller configurations are people using? I haven’t tried it yet but I don’t see how the Wii controller with or without the nunchuck will work as well as the GC or classic controller.

Classic controller for me… I like so far, but it’s the first time since getting my own apartment that I’ve missed having housemates, for sure.

I smell a weekend of whiskey and Smash with college friends this summer!

I’m using the Wiimote and nunchuck mainly because it feels more comfortable in my hand than the Gamecube controller.

I’m having no luck at all with the online play. I tried last night around 4am and couldn’t find opponents, now I’m trying again and I can get one after several minutes.

Shall we play this afternoon starting at around roughly 4pm Eastern time (an hour and half from now for people to see the thread)? I’ll add anyone who posts their friend code to this thread and we can have an SDMB tournament.

My friend code: 2964-8245-0446

I got mine! Happily reading the strategy guide. Cause I wanna.

I’m using my girlfriend’s account (with her gracious permission) to post this because I don’t have one of my own.

My code is: 2492-3785-3977

Just Some Guy, I added you. I have to dust and vacuum right now but I’ll be back in 20-30 minutes.

Well, I’ve learned one cool thing. With friend online play two people can play on one console.

Nice match Thalia. Online play with the friends list works pretty well but it needs a little more flexibility in chat.

Likewise. And I agree about the chat. One thing that I found disappointing was that you can’t say your speech bubble thing without taunting. I imagine that will make people less likely to communicate because it leaves you open for attack.

How was the connection on your end? Mine was smooth but there was a definite (but small) delay from my input to the character’s actions on screen. Plus I think the entire gameplay was slightly slower. Maybe it’s a result of distance. I’m in Montreal, is that far from you?

BTW, if you haven’t already guessed this is Thalia’s boyfriend. I figured this was a good time to register/subscribe. I’ve been a LONG time lurker but I’ve never really felt the need to post. Actually, I’m the one that got Thalia interested in the dope to begin with.

Now we need more people to put their friend codes up!

Pretty good but I suspect my Wii was the one hosting. I’m located at kind of the intersection of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri so central US. Distant, but not nearly as bad as it could be.

Definitely.

I tried multiple times during the day to get on the Wi-Fi play, and never had any luck. In the afternoon, I was “connecting,” but nobody would join games and the timer would run out with me alone. This evening, it failed to connect over and over.

I figure there’s just a major hit on their servers and I’ll get on sooner or later. Might as well unlock characters playing in Solo first.

It is fun, but I’m really having trouble with the remote/nunchuck control scheme (especially jumping. C is awkward to hit, and “up” on the left analog stick is spotty at best). I think tomorrow, I’ll try the classic controller layout.
