I’m liking it quite a bit, so far. It’s definitely slower than Melee, but I’m starting to get a feel for it and it’s all good. Subspace Emissary is a lot of fun, and chock full of needless posturing. Now if they’d only get online working properly…
I can’t connect to the Wi-Fi at all. I figured it was my weak wireless signal, but if others are having trouble too, I may keep trying before I go out and get the USB-LAN adaptor (never had trouble connecting for the various Wii channels, like Everybody Votes and Check Mii Out).
I’m still getting through Subspace Emissary. This game is addictive as all get-out.
The game felt rushed. They added a ton of new game mechanics without fine-tuning them.
First, the game was way too fast – not that I couldn’t keep up, but it inadvertently removed aerial combat from the game, which was a huge part of the original. Brawl has thankfully restored the speed to a sane level, allowing aerial combat to once again flourish.
The air-dodge looked and felt like a glitch. The way your character would just jerk in a particular direction – ugh. Plus it was the gateway that allowed “wave-dashing,” which practically broke the game.
Most of the levels (while pretty) played poorly and felt half-assed. I’ll never forgive them for completely butchering the Mario Bros “Classic Stage” – they made the arena completely flat, took away the warp pipes and piranha plants, plus the teeter totter thing!
The roster was also filled with a ridiculous amount of poorly implemented clones. Seriously,. how is Dr. Mario considered his own character? And many of the stages were lame and poorly made too (Poke Floats is the biggest waste of time I have ever seen.)
I have many more reasons, but those are the main ones in a nutshell.
I tried it out at Best Buy yesterday, but didn’t buy a copy yet. It seemed fun, but I’m a total newbie with a Wii, so I’m not completely comfortable with the wiimote yet.
I dropped by GameStop on Saturday afternoon to put down my deposit for the midnight sale, then stopped by the grocery store…where the video rental section had it out on the shelf for rent. $5 to get an 8-hour jump on the world and not have to venture out in craptacular weather at midnight? You’re on. Funny thing was, I was obviously not the first person to have played it, so I suspect some Food City employees had an even bigger jump.
I am loving it. I’m thinking about playing around with the Wiimote/nunchuk controller mapping, because I don’t really like using C (the upper Nunchuk button) to jump. I just can’t get used to moving and jumping with my left hand. I want to use A, but I also like having it for punching.
So far I’ve mostly played with Mario, Starfox, and King Dedede. No favorite yet.
I won’t be online for a bit; my internet connection at the house disconnects intermittently, probably due to line noise from the furnace. The Windstream guy is coming to the house today, and if he can fix it, it’s on, bitches.
Well I picked this game up to try it out. I’d be glad to play online with any of you vets as I’ve only barely played Melee so you can add me to your friend codes if you want to. Mine is 5327-0607-1075
This is better than Melee. Distinctly. They also took out a few of the crappy clones (Dr. Mario and Pichu, for starters), increased the variety of stages, and made solo a lot more interesting. So far I’ve only played with the Gamecube controller, and I’m annoyed that up on the left thumbstick no longer jumps, but enh. Still fucking awesome.
My Wii is at home, so I don’t even know my friend code.
Tap jumping is customizable. If you go to options > controls and create a new entry you can customize all the buttons and options. When looking at the controls for a specific controller-type (in your case GC) there’s a box in the top right that says Tap Jump [On/Off].
Then when you go to brawl, click the pencil icon beside where it says “Player 1” and select your entry.
I think this is one of the best changes they’ve made. Personally, I hate tap jumping and love that it can be turned off.
Has anyone ben able to play online with this game yet? Particularly the “Anyone” option? I have yet to connect to a single opponent using that option and it’s very frustrating. It just seeks the other 3 opponents until it times out. I haven’t tried using friend codes yet.
Oh and speaking of stages I really like the stage editor. It’s not very complex and you can’t do events but you can make just about any basic stage design you want in it.
I once managed to play three games in a row with one random person. One of those games, there were actually three of us. It appears to me that the trick is to let the time run…and run…and hopefully you’ll get at least one person in with you by the time you get through the character select and stage select screens. I think if you end up with the punching bag while the connection establishes, you’re in good shape.
Wooo! If I had any vacation time, I would use it to stay home and play this game…then maybe I would be comfortable joining an online game. It’s awesome though.
