I can’t drive across my state in one day.

I drove from Atlanta to Savannah just last month. It’s about 400 miles, not especially long, but arduous as hell. Once you get about 2 hours outside Atlanta, there is nothing but farmland. Maybe a gas station here and there, but otherwise, they just put exits on the highway to amuse themselves. Man, that was an awful trip. And let me tell you, rural Georgia radio is no treat whatsoever.
And Savannah has no suburbs or anything. You’re just driving along in these miles of farmland, and up pops the Georgia coast.
My own personal hell was Montana. Dear Christ, driving from Seattle to Orlando was bad enough, but it felt like we spent three freaking weeks in Montana, even back when one could do 105 all the way across and not have to worry too much about getting caught (partially because the state’s one police officer was normally somewhere else…).
(And tom, I agree… getting across South Dakota on the 90 is pretty awful too…)
Yah they are, do lots of damage too. But make gooooood eatin.
My personal hell… well I haven’t travelled a whole lot but I’d say the drive to Fort McMurray… such a loooong drive with NO pit stops anywhere except for an hour outside of the Fort…
Bah, s’nothing!
Narrad, Western Australian-born and bred.
Amen! I did that in the middle of July with a toddler and a two-month-old in the back seat. The worst part was that we had to go across Kansas diagonally.
Heh. Me neither.
Oh, and g8rguy: :p:p:p
[sub]Malign my state, will you?[/sub]

lauramarlane, I’ve done that! Friends: Rhonda; Lea; Scott; me, and on the way back, a boy named Marcus.
In a Kia Sephia, and on the way back i was sitting with the boys. we saw a bit of Madison,Wisconsin.
I went canoeing, with the boys, and got dumped into the drink three times, i’d like to go canoeing again, just for the hell of it.
Just goes to show, I liked the drive across South Dakota on I90. Both ways. Through Georgia in I75, OTOH, was always horrible.
Of course you did. It looked like home with fewer crossroads.
tomndebb, brilliant idea! As a sanity saving measure, we ended up buying the boys their own walkmans but didn’t have enough batteries to get through all of Harry Potter books on tape. But I’ll definitely remember your suggestion for next time!
Oh my god, did I say “next time”?!
And anya marie, you are a brave woman!
Tom: I have nothing particularly germane to add to this thread. I just wanted to say that I had noticed your absence and was getting ready to start a thread asking if anyone could confirm that the reason was a holiday and nothing more serious. I am very pleased to see you back and hope that you enjoyed at least some parts of your holiday.
Oh, we enjoyed nearly all of it, but a recitation of places where we enjoyed the view would have been a bit boring to read.
The kids got to see Glacier Park, Mt. Ranier, their uncle’s wedding, Puget Sound from a ferry, the Olympic Peninsula (including the rain forest and the Pacific Ocean), Yellowstone Park, Devil’s Tower, Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument, lots of open countryside, and vast, starlit nights unhindered by city lights (with a bit of the Aurora Borealis on the last night out). I got to see all that for the second or third time. (Well, this is my brother’s first marriage.)
It was fun, but the immediate reaction on arriving home was relief.
SURE you can! You just have to be in I-40!
Nah, much too hilly to be like home.
