Not at all, and neither does the art, and more’s the fun. Larger-than-life portraits of occultly animated warlocks are ideal, in fact. Just don’t expect to see anything more than the eyes to “move,” though.
Not exactly great art, but I’d have to include the painting the Eric Stoltz’s character did of Lea Thompson’s character in “Some Kind of Wonderful.” I had enough of a crush on her that the movie seemed better than the standard John Hughes stuff. It wasn’t, of course…age and wisdom have showed me that!
I know that guy, he’s always persuing his muse which he swears takes the form of some bird or other.
Crazy, I think it’s the peyote.
That guy is a genius.
SUPER genius.
Jodie Foster’s film Little Man Tate featured paintings supposedly done by child prodigies. In reality, some of them were the work of artists and art students in Cincinnati, where most of the film was shot.
I stand corrected!
Not including matte paintings?
Hmm… I hadn’t even thought of them. Even though matte paintings are collectible (if often supremely unwieldy) and undeniably artistic (and often brilliant) works in their own right, I’m going to disallow the matte work because they’re usually intended to provide realistic (even in a sci-fi context) background, as opposed to making an artistic statement within the narrative, as in a painting of a character’s great-grandfather.
You have to draw the line somewhere.

I kinda liked the brain-ripping statue from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Damned if I can actually find a picture of it, though.
How about that giant painting of The Master from Manos, the Hands of Fate? You could even have a speaker near it playing a constant loop of Torgo’s theme.
I want the painting of Embassador Molari from his quarters on Babylon5. I heard a rumor somewhere that Peter Jurrasik (the actor who plays him) has it in his home.
If we’re including plays, the all-white painting in ART.
As well as the painting of Liza Eliot from the Glamour Dream in LADY IN THE DARK.
The work (it wasn’t exactly a painting) in I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing .
How about any of the paintings from Night Gallery?
How about all the sculptures in House of Wax? Or were those borrowed from some actual waxworks somewhere?
I want the paintings hanging in Eli Cash’s apartment in The Royal Tenenbaums.
We could make a whole exhibit out of the many dick drawings from Superbad.
We’d certainly need the painting of James Stewart and Harvey. Maybe it isn’t great art, but it’s a great movie.
And I’d love to see the Black Bird, even though Triskadecamus doesn’t like it, just for the historical value.
