Let’s pretend we replaced the existing committee, and we got in to an argument over the following hypothetical situation:
A Regular Season champ from a “1-bid Conference”
VS.
Middling team from a BCS conference
If I argued in favor of team A based on the argument that they won their conference, what do you think the room’s reaction would be?
Depends a lot on the whole picture. How did the two teams compare in terms of strength of schedule and quality wins? Did the small conference team lose in their conference tournament championship game to a tough conference competitor, or did they lay an egg against a crappy team in the first round? Did the power conference team look good in their tournament? How did both teams play coming down the stretch in the last few weeks of the season?
All else being equal, I’d probably rather see the small conference team in the tournament. Neither team in this scenario is likely to be a final four contender, so I’d rather see the small conferences get the bid and the extra TV dollars that go with it.
