The First Lady is the unofficial social hostess of the WH and, thereby, the nation. The role has always been filled by a woman – usually the president’s wife; if he has none, a female relative or friend.
If we have a woman president, say, Clinton, does she serve as her own First Lady, or does Bill step in as “First Gentleman” [pause to allow snickering to die down], or does a woman, perhaps Chelsea, have to be found for the job?
I’m sure Bill would gladly accept the honor as I’m quite sure he would enjoy “entertaining” the ladies of high society…
“Hey there, want to see my humidor?”
Well, I think the jokes ARE funny AND well-deserved given Bill’s licentiousness, but what I would abhor more than anything is any Clinton in office, if only for the reason that we are not supposed to endure dynasties in the Executive Branch…if Hillary gets elected we will have had either a Bush or a Clinton in office since 1988!
1988!
It’s time for a change in that Bush/Clinton/Clinton/Bush/Bush cycle…
In this particular case, I believe the introduction of the presidential couple would be “President Hillary Rodham Clinton and Former President Bill Clinton”. There would be no “First Lady”, as such, though the entertainment style in the White House would probably revert to something more or less in keeping with the style overseen (at least in name) by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during her husband’s terms in office. Hillary, as president, would be the hostess of events in the White House and there would be no need for a woman devoted only to a ceremonial role. Bill would be the host, standing beside her in receiving lines and such, in a fairly Prince Philip-like capacity. Chelsea would be “the President’s daughter”, twice over.
Non-Clinton female presidents in the future would still be hostesses of their own events in the White House and the introduction would probably be something like “President Mary Jones and Mr. David Jones”.
I’m sure Chelsea Clinton would serve as First Lady.
Then, after eight years of being First Daughter and four years of being First Lady, she will run for president herself, claiming that her “experience” qualifies her for the position.
