A week? Took me a month to finish my first playthrough. weighed in at ~88 hours IIRC.
I second the BG series. You should be able to play it on an old PC/laptop. They are available at GOG.com
The gothic series are another option. Though you’ll need a gaming PC for the first 3, the latest one is available for xbox 360 too. Another great sword and sorcery game that will run on old PC hardware is Neverwinter Nights.
Really only Mass Effect 2 is out, Mass Effect 1 has no real aiming involved if you roll any class that’s not a heavy shooter, especially since it pauses combat if you go to the select ability wheel (or… it did in the PC version anyway). Hell, with adept you really only need singularity, lift, and barrier and you can basically go the rest of the game with your allies set on Kamikaze and never aiming at anything yourself again because of the massive radius a fully upgraded lift and singularity have.
This might be an out-there option, but what about the Assassin’s Creed series? It’s conspiracy-history rather than fantasy, but the assassinations and climbing around are basically 3D mazes and puzzles. There’s also a large focus on close combat, and I’ve found it has the same effect of making me feel like a stone cold badass with a few button presses.
I’d go for 2 first, just because there’s so much stuff to do and it’s a much less frustrating experience than 1. You might want to hit up Wikipedia for a plot summary of 1, though, as it pretty much dumps you straight in the action.
Hey Guys… I am several days into Dragon Age Origins (only playing after work and all day on Sunday).
IT IS TOTALLY AWESOME. I played for approx. 6 hours as an elf, and did something with my weapons that I couldn’t change back… and it sucked. I took a break. Then I started again as a human warrior, and haven’t looked back. I have finally figured out how to handle the equipment wheel, and have actually started changing what I have equipped to deal with certain things.
I just finished the proving in the Dwarf world last night, and I saved right before the mission to destroy Jarvia.
Ultimately, totally kick ass. You did not let me down Dope community. Many thanks.
ps. Foolscap - one thing I forgot to mention… in addition to kind of sucking at shooting… I also kind of suck at jumping. Assassins Creed would be a nightmare I think, but I will try one of these days.
The jumping is pretty forgiving, really - you hold down the button to run and point you guy in the direction you want to go. Timing is less important than knowing the route - recognising that one rooftop is close enough while another one isn’t, that type of thing.
Glad to see that Dragon Age is scratching that itch, though - it should keep you occupied throughout the winter
Glad you liked DAO. Fair word of warning, however, Dragon Age Awakening has some serious bugs that can glitch out a few quest lines. You might want to check out a walkthrough, if you get that, before you set out. Talking to some folks in some cities was able to break entire quest lines, last time I checked.
Just thought I would update you guys… particularly Aclockwork.
I LOVED Dragon Age: Origins. I bought the combo pack that came with Awakenings and all the extras. I have played through the game several times, with each of the origin stories, etc… hundreds of hours played.
My husband, not quite so happy… But he will get over it.
The Mass Effect series is pretty much Dragon Age IN SPAAAAAACE!!!
Bioshock has some good RPG elements and great visuals.
I’ve heard that the latest Gothic game, Arcania: Gothic IV is kinda similar; the medieval style setting and 3rd person visuals are very reminiscent of the latest Fables, and there’s the whole ‘consequence’ thing going. I haven’t played it though, and it’s got mixed reviews. Caveat emptor, but IGN is fairly kind to it. Arcania: Gothic IV Review - IGN
Risen, again one I haven’t played, is also similar - got good reviews for the PC, but sadly the 360 version is reportedly pants.
Overlord I and II have the same tongue in cheek feel and ‘RPG-lite’ (let’s be honest) elements, but as the name suggests, it’s less about heroic quests and more about taking over the world - of course!

If you liked the Fable games, I’d recommend taking a look at Okami (especially if you like Japanese mythology). It’s frequently compared to the Zelda games, but I always felt it had a little Fable in there, too.
