If I was superstitious...

I’m not superstitious, and not particularly won over by the supernatural.

But boy do I understand the inclination. Even the things already long explained by science can still give me a sense of wonder, so I can easily understand what fleets of fancy the natural world led the ignorant masses to imagine.

And then there’s the matter of the statistical nature of things to eventually do improbable things given enough time, aided by the brain’s hard wired pattern finding tendencies, and of course the pitfalls of confirmation bias.

That said, despite knowing better, I find my brain desperately trying to persuade me to believe ridiculous things because, well, they keep seeming to happen.

So, what things, against your better judgement, do you find yourself almost wanting to believe, because even though logic says it can’t be so, your repeated world experiences keep trying to convince you otherwise?

Mine:

  1. If I didn’t know better… I’d think injuries are magnetic. I always seem to get injuries in the same side of the body. And injuries even seem to attract other irritants - itchy spots seem to suck in extra lint and other ticklers, and my two spots of previous injury and current sensitivity on my foot are the only places that annoying gravel bits ever stick to!

  2. IIDKB… Inanimate objects are out to get me. Seriously, they fall onto me as I pass by. They suck my body parts into them so I crash into them or trip over them even when I’m being cautious. They randomly get too hot or explode or whatever. They are out to get me!

I ain’t superstitious, but a black cat has crossed my trail.
