Looking at things from the UK it seemed that there was a small but powerful part of the US political scene that did not accept the legitimacy of a democratic President and were determined to get him on something, anything. From Whitewater to Vince Foster to the laughable monicagate.

I don’t think you can really make a good comparison of outgoing opinion polls for JFK. After all, on November 22, nobody knew that was his last day. And on November 24… well, would you want to be the pollster who has to call people and ask “so… how do you like the president now?”
I agree. In addition to Afghanistan and Iraq, the Republicans have taken the war to the Democrats. It’s the only one they are winning convincingly.
