If Puerto Rico Became Independent...

If I, as a Tennessean, move to New York, I can become a legal residence of New York with all rights and privileges within, say, 60 days (voting, etc.). Is the same true if I move to Puerto Rico from Tennessee? Would I be considered a Puerto Rican with the full rights of an islander?

My curiosity here is that, though Puerto Ricans are American citizens(without the right to vote in US Presidential elections, not having to pay Federal Income Tax etc), Puerto Rico has the right, which has been often exercised, to choose to become an independent nation.

If I moved there would I be able to vote in such a independence referendum and, if so and if independence is chosen, would I then become a citizen of a foreign nation and lose my US citizenship?

I would assume that on the citizenship issue, Congress would likely pass legislation that would allow people born in the 50 states who then moved to Puerto Rico to choose which country they wanted to be citizens of.

But that’s a WAG.
