If someone asked for "the first three Star Wars movies," you'd assume...

And Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series.

I’d assume they wanted the good one, the best one, and the okay one rather than the disappointing one, the worst one, and the mediocre one.

Yeah, unless I stop to think about it, I just assume “A New Hope” was one of the prequels (eps 1-3).

That goes for me, too.

Words have specific meanings.

First three Movies - the first three in in release order.
First three Episodes - the prequels (I-III).

Star Wars, Empire, Jedi

I voted IV-VI as I understand Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and the first sucky Star Wars movie are now considered 4-6. The next 3 sucky Star Wars movies are 1-3 and lets hope the next 3 can avoid the suckatude of 3-6.

This is a trick question. No one actually would ask for 1-3.

Sing it.

By default, I assume “first” refers to release order.

Plus I’d argue the prequels, for what value they work, only do so after having seen at least the first two movies. (I’d say the first three, but I’ve heard some people recommend you watch them 4,5,(1),2,3,6, seeing the prequels as flashbacks to fill in the story of Darth Vader after the big reveal in 5, and then still getting a proper ending in 8. I’ve yet to try it, but it sounds good.)

This.

Well, they might if they hadn’t seen them before.

Suppose you actually wanted to ask for episodes 1, 2 and 3, how would you phrase that without using the long winded “episodes 1, 2 and 3” and assuming you didn’t use the phrases “the prequels” or “the first three”? :smack:

Chronologically episodes 4-6 were first.

Um no. Chronologically I think you’ll find that 1,2,3 generally comes before 4,5,6

Try these

  • Can I get the 3 newer Star Wars movies please
  • Give me the shittiest Star Wars movies

That isn’t what “chronologically” means.

I guess it depends whether the chronology is ours or the one inside the movies, but I dont think that’s what scoots meant.

“The first three Star Wars movies” is seven syllables.

“Star Wars episodes 1, 2, and 3” is 8 syllables.

I’m not seeing a big savings, there, and “the first three” is ambiguous; it will likely force you to clarify.

throw out “episodes” and cut your syllables almost in half.

No, because then you invite confusion over whether you mean “the first three Star Wars movies released” or “the first three SW movies by internal chronology.” Episodes avoids that.

So, “Star Wars 1, 2, and 3” is too ambiguous? Then fuckit, I wouldn’t even try answering the question.
